Im currently working on a project aimed at targeting printers in a humorous way, and am trying to find a stereotype of how they are perceived by the people that use their services,

as a graphic designer what are your general views on a printers personality?

i would be grateful for any suggestions and comments

    Thanks

Hi km1 and welcome to GDF!

We ask that all new members take a few minutes to read through important threads here and here. These will explain our rules, answer frequently asked questions and explain some of the long running jokes you'll run into.

Printers as in machines? (most print machines I would classify in the same category as Stephen King's The Mangler. They are all possessed!)
      or
      Pre-press techs?
      Actual pressmen?
      Print sales reps?
      Print CSRs?
      Print Brokers?
      Print finishers?
      Regular press?
      Silkscreen press?
      Large format press?

      Lots of variables there.

I could have a lot of fun with that, being just about anything on that list except for regular press. LOL.

Considering for the past three weeks I've been in constant meetings and conference calls with a printer, and flying from Virginia to New York tonight to do a press check because they can't get a color right, you don't want to know what I think about printers right now...

            Hopefully not serial killer.

Curious how one would represent a printer personality in a humorous way without being insulting.
I'm all for good fun bu there are designers wearing pre-press hats that work in print shops. If they receive whatever it is you are developing, would it be good for your business?

Wasn't there a youtube video around about a pressman and a designer color match process? That was pretty funny.

hi and thanks for all the responses so far,

not the mechanical type of printer no, print techs, and print techs of any kind that come into contact and make decisions on the type of paper used for print

the brief is an advertising campaign, which targets printers, influencing them to look/buy into a wide range of paper stocks and ranges on offer

              thannks

I think that the printing industry has enough problems in this economy without being "targeted" or "stereotyped". There are good printers and there are bad printers, just like there are good designers and bad designers. I can't count how many times I've accepted files from a so called "professional designer" who had no concept of what a bleed is.
                It's tiring and it's disheartening..

I'm not sure what a print tech is, but in my experience, choice of paper is usually determined by the customer, after being presented by various choices and recommendations by the sales rep, based on the type of printing job and its end purpose.

The range of papers a printing company offers is usually influenced by availability, price and demand from customers. The company will keep stock in house that is popular with its customers and order others on an as-needed basis. Paper company reps usually provide sample books to the print shops so customers can see what the actual stock looks like.

I think that this project is more of a personal, home type printer. I would just stick with the facts. PPM, color vs black/white, etc.

It has to do with paper. See post #7.

I have to agree with what PossumGal said.
The person making the decision is not the print tech or pressman.
The company business manager or production manager may give papers a pass or not depending on if their equipment can feed it and print on it. Based on that, a sample offering is made to the client and it is the client that chooses the paper based on project vision and budget.

Yep, the person making the decisions at our printing company is usually the director or the production manager. The pressmen wouldn't never even see sales or marketing materials.

Yum. I do love salmon sandwiches. The bakery near me do great smoked salmon bagels. It's not a bagel shop so they don't jack up the prices.
