  • Most common computer display resolutions

    #1
I'm working on a possible project to make some desktop wallpaper for desktops/laptops (not tablets or mobile devices) and I'm wondering if anybody has a list or a link to a list of the most common display resolutions or aspect ratios currently?

    Common ratios:
    -16:9
    -16:10
    -4:3

    Common display resolutions:
-there are a brazillion of these

For my final output, I'd like to offer 2-3 resolutions built at the highest resolution (say 1920 pixels or 1600 pixels wide), since it's really not feasible to build 20 different resolutions to make everybody happy.

Any help or advice? Thanks peeps!

Usually when I do wallpapers, I use 2550 x 1440 as my "final size". Normally, I work at twice that size and then just save different versions based on the final sizes I am looking for.

    I NEVER go smaller than 1024 x 768. 1900 x 1200 is a really good one as well.

I would use http://us.battle.net/d3/en/media/wal...#/wallpaper025 as a good example...but, they always add a TON of different sizes to choose from.

Something else you could do is to go troll around devintart. They have a good wallpaper section and you can grab an idea of sizes from them as well.

Can you make an action to save out as different sizes? make it easy for you.

I cannot remember but there was a nice designer wallpaper site i used to go to.
check out wallpaper sites and see what they show and use and have as the popular ones.

Making an action isn't a problem, or making a super big wallpaper and saving out some duplicates at different sizes isn't an issue either. This will likely end up as a freebie download on a website, and I don't want to end up having 12 different links for downloads of different resolutions. I'd prefer to have maybe 3 for download and let the user's computer scale them down if necessary.

I really would prefer to just make these work for the 16:9 and 16:10 crowd, but I realize there are probably still some out there with a 4:3 display. I'll have some text on the wallpaper that needs to not get cut off, so I'm just trying to plan for 99% of all scenarios.

it also depends on how nice the photos/jpgs are compressed, sometimes they get pretty large.

I plan on saving them out of Photoshop with a JPG quality setting of 10/100.

Aaaaaaand we're done. I opted to make my artwork at 2560x1600, but actually only saved out 4 versions (for now) at 4 different ratios. If anyone would like to have a look, they're on the website: www.geoeye.com/2013Calendar

Let me start by saying amazing images. The Burning Man image surprised me. I know it's gotten popular but I hadn't realized how popular. 50k people!?

I like the globe with the info and expected the company name and logo but what I found unexpected is the calendar covering a good portion of the image. When I choose a wallpaper it's for the image not to use as a calendar. So I'd have to say I really wouldn't use these as my wallpaper. My 2 cents.

                    Thanks for the feedback!

For anyone who's interested in an image that doesn't have a calendar, most/all of our images in our Image Gallery are also available for download. Find the image you want in the index (http://www.geoeye.com/CorpSite/galle...ery-index.aspx), then click the "Download Hi Res" button under the image for an unobstructed view. Most of those larger images are 3000x3000 pixels.
