  • Roland Camm-1

    #1
Hello everyone - I'm trying to get my Roland Camm-1 up and running. I have a dell computer that I have tried to use with it but the computer is way to low on memory and has a bunch of problems. I'm looking into getting a computer to just use for the machine and would like to know if anyone has any ideas what would work best and what kind of program would work best for the roland camm 1 vinyl cutter. It did not come with any software so I'm starting from scratch. Thank You

I have one of those exact same machines in my basement. I run it with SignLab. I believe you can run it directly from Illustrator or CorelDraw but I've never tried. SignLab does everything I need to do.

Does Roland have any rip software available for that machine on their website? Pretty sure Cosmo has you covered tho.

Buy a Mac, they have plenty of power to run your Camm 1.

Except that most of the signmaking software is PC only. I know there are some Mac ones out there, but the vast majority that I know of are only for PC.

Roland software isn't supported on a Mac.

Almost any current PC will run sign software.
And you do need a PC. None of the signsofts or roland cutting programs run on a mac.

We use a mid-grade Dell for our vinyl plotter. It doesn't need to render. It just needs to plot.

Like Cosmo, we also use Signlab but mostly as an interface device. Most of the design is done in Illustrator and imported.

If you do not have any software for the plotter, you won't be able to run it directly from Illustrator. You either have to get the Roland interface or one of the signsofts (Signlab or FlexiSign are the industry standards).
A rip will not help you much, unless that thing is also a printer. A rip doesn't plot cuts.

Have you checked the Roland Download site?

Then how have I been making signs for the last 15 years?

I should have said they don't support the Versaworks rip software I need to run my Versacamm on a Mac. I can only do it through a PC client or use Signlab or Flexisign, neither of which is Roland software.

I'm curious. ARE you running Roland RIP software on a Mac?

No, I am using illustrator with a Vinyl Express plotter. My camm 1 served me well for almost 15 years, I forgot who makes the Vinyl Express plotters.

So I stand by my original statement, Roland software isn't supported on a Mac.

I usually stand by the refrigerator.

                              Thank You

Thank you everyone for the input. I haven't checked roland download site. I didn't know they had one. I bought the roland machine without directions or software so I'm pretty much starting from scratch. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you so much. I do feel I'm going to go with another PC since I've always worked with pc's and am very comfortable with them.
