  • Chinese design problem

    #1
    Hi,

I have been asked by a customer to re-produce this design (attached).

It is obviously very low resolution so I need to redesign it from scratch. Any ideas where I can find a chinese temple like this? I can't find one that looks similar no matter what search term I use. I tried Chinese temples, houses, asian houses etc..

    Please help

Are you looking for stock images or clip art? Or are you looking for photos to use as a guide to draw a better one from? Not clear whether you are straight recreating the existing artwork for print or redesigning it.

Personally, I think the whole design is very dated and Chinese restaurant and take away menus that I know of no longer look like this.

Hi, ideally I need clip art.

I've searched for the term Pagoda as suggested but cannot find anything remotely similar. 99% of chinese menus and designs use this old fashion look.

Redesign from scratch? then do it from scratch. I could have done it in the time you took to post and reply here. Its basically simple shapes + pattern which you mask with the shapes. Viola.

Low end chinese restaurant menus all look like that. At least where I live.

I'd have more trouble locating the dragon. That would be hard for me to draw.

Do they want the exact same design, or an updated version of this design?

I would redraw from scratch. Or better yet, redesign from scratch and make it better. It won't take much.

Looks like it'd be pretty easy to recreate in Illustrator.

Yeah, redrawing that in Illustrator would only take a few minutes.

Really though, it's a shame that so many Chinese restaurants go with this stereotypical low-budget look for their printed materials. There's so much design potential in the incredibly rich depth of Chinese aesthetics. Yet most menus, business cards, promotional items, etc., look like something out of an old Charlie Chan movie.

My parents owned a Chinese take-out. I was the official graphic designer and there wasn't a pagoda or dragon in sight. We weren't going for low end though. Low end places often use clip art and even the same menu boards. I've swear I've seen the exact same menus used in more than one shops makes me wonder if there is a Chinese take-out fit out one stop shop?

If you're going low end, what's the real point of a redesign? If you're touching this job at all, you may as well do it properly to last another few more years (or a decade). In for a penny, in for a pound.

In the end we re-designed it. But apart from this design in question, it is often very difficult to draw other objects like the chinese dragon like someone posted earlier.

We got by on this one though..

                            Thanks

Glad you got to re-design it.

If you can't illustrate, buy an image or commission it. Often it's not economical to pay someone who is not an illustrator to do an illustration. Not everyone one is an illustrator. That's why there are illustrators.
