  • RSI - WACOM vs mouse

    #1
    Hi
I'm getting symptoms of RSI in my mouse hand, wrist and especially in my index finger, and am researching ergonomic 'mice' and WACOM tablets, and which are best at minimising the chance of RSI.

Up till now I've been using a Microsoft Intellipoint mouse, which is very accurate and easy to move around, but doesn't seem to 'fit' my hand.

Everyone works in their own way and so different solutions will obviously suit different people. But I've heard some report that a WACOM tablet is better than a mouse, because it encourages the use of a different set of muscles, different arm posture etc etc.

The theory seems to make sense but they're expensive, and the only person I know who has one that I could borrow to try has one too old for the current G4 (serial port rather than USB).

Are they worth the money? Or are there mice available which are equally as good?

Get a serial to USB connector. I think Belkin makes one. Short money.
Lots of people on here have said the Wacom tablet has healed their wrist problems. Our draftsman swears by them.

my friend has one, they are def sweet and worth the money!
at least once a day at work i will think to myself, 'damn, i could be doing this a lot faster and easier if i had a freaking tablet!'
but remember that they are best for drawing and not interfacing, so you'll still want to use your mouse.

btw, what is RSI, is it similar to carpultunnle?

I have a Wacom 12x18 and I use it all day everyday. It is the best tool I have. I used to have pain in my arm elbow and wrist and now with the tablet I haven't had any pain for over a year! The one I bought was over $900 but it is worth it. I use if for everything and droped using a mouse all togather. The pen has two buttons on it that you can program to what ever you want them to do. If you have any specific questions let me know I am one of the biggest advocates for tablets on this forum, they rock... Like I said I have no pain in my mouse arm what so ever!

Get one if you can, you don't have to get the biggest one out there to be happy, my company just had extra money to spend! lucky me!

          - Repetitive Strain Injury.

          - And yes... Damage to the carpal tunnel region is caused by lying your arm flat on a table without moving it for too long. This puts pressure on the blood vessels near to the surface of your wrist, restricting circulation.

Btw, thanks for the tip about serial to USB. I will look into that...

I'm with Mickey... using a Wacom is fast, and I think it's important to note that realistic hand pressure is possible with the Wacom (so beyond the mouse), bringing a whole other dimension of quality to work done in Photoshop and Painter, etc.

Sort of off-topic, but just curious... Does anyone use a tablet for gaming?

You got a logitech mouse? I have one with a thumb rest its black and dont need much wrist movement. Other than that get an eggsercizer, builds wrist strength.
