  • How to start

    #1
Hey i am interested in trying out graphic desing (anime/game type design but other design is cool to me too) and i was wondering how to start out.. i know you'll probably say (or i've got this sine i was talking about anime/game design) grab a program like 3dsmax and try it out... but i was wondering if you guys have any good tutorial places or just some more helpful news.... that's very vague to me and it's hard for me to start and try and suceed when you say grab this program and start fiddling... like maybe tutorials or something...

I know i sound kinda weird and since i'm trying this out so "late" to see if i like it is kinda silly too shoulda tried it before :-p btw i'm thinking of graphic design as a minor in college just so you guys get to know me ... don't want to be a stranger

game design is not graphic design

graphic design is not game design

    Game design is game design

    graphic design is graphic design

    and animation is animation.

Animation and game design are more so simulary then comparing graphic design to gamedesign.

    just to clear that up

it doesn't mean that techniques learned cannot be applied to design situations! e.g. I find illustration (which i primarily do for animations) is very useful in design.
i'd argue that it is a grey area, game design is multi-disciplinary (and therefore i believe a mostly useless term), e.g. game interface design seems to be closely governed by layout rules they share some fundamental skills but implement them very specifically. However i do think it is important to specialise eventually, thats why taking a bachelors degree can be good, because it teaches you the basic skills, (i do fine arts and even psychology modules) then guides you how to implement these skills in specific areas.

      definition

      graphic design:

Graphic Design is an older term for the field of Visual Design. This term refers specifically to the use of graphic media (such as color, symbol, and type) to communicate a style or expression. In practice, however, Visual Design is a better term since most Graphic Designers are skilled in more than this narrow scope of visuals and graphic elements are only a subset of the possible visual components applicable to visual expression.
