    I am planning on buying a used HP Designjet 3500CP. I wanted to know if anyone has used this plotter before and what they thought of it. I also wanted to know if anyone uses the HP plotters to print banners. The other thing I am planning on buying is a vinyl cutter. I have my eye on a Master 48" vinyl cutter and plotter. Has anyone used the Master brand of cutters before?

    I also need a laminator that is at least 42" if anyone has advise on that.

    If it's specifically a plotter, it may take forever to print banners and may not have the ink capability to print on anything other than paper. Might want to check into that. I'm not familiar with the model number.

    Never used a Master cutter either. Make sure you get a plotting software. SignLab or Flexi are good ones. There are a few others out there, some put out by the makers of the machines, but the machine is useless without them. You can't cut directly from Illustrator, Freehand, or Corel. Just so ya know. And Quark or Indesign require one of the aformentioned three to get it into a format you can open in a sign cutting program.

      We have a HP 1055CM that prints up to 36" wide. We use it for our customer proofs and for content, checking folds and backups on a lightweight proofing paper. It's pretty fast but I'm not too sure about different substrates.
      Our Epson 9600 on the other hand will print on almost anything, including canvas and fine arts paper but compromises speed for quality. We print color proofs on semi matte photo paper for the customer's color OK and for the pressmen.

        Rick, I noticed that about the Epsons when we thought about buying one. The HP5500 had em beat by miles.

          Thanks for your help PrintDriver. I don't really have a lot of experience with large format printers but for the money I think it will be enough to get me started. I called HP and they said that that printer is able to print on vinyl and cloth but it is recommended that I use HP's vinyl.

            Of course they recommend that you use their vinyl. You can use others as long as they have a coating that is receptive to HP inks. It'll tell you in the sell sheet what printers a media is rated for. Test first. And profile. Then the next day they'll change the coating on you. Ha ha <sigh> Same for Olam. Some stick to inkjet. Some don't.
            Good luck with that.

            Get a big dumpster for your first month.
            (that was meant good naturedly no matter how true it may be )
