  • Graduated Tint Problem With Harlequin Rip

    WERE OUTPUTTING A JOB WITH A CYAN GRADUATED TINT 98%-0% WITH A TOUCH OF MAGENTA BEHIND IT. THE JOBS BEEN PRINTED AND WE'VE GOT A STEPPED EFFECT ACCROSS THE PAGE WHERE THE TINT IS. THE JOBS BEEN PRINTED CMYK AND WE'VE DONE GRADUATED TINTS BEFORE. HAS ANYONE GOT ANY IDEAS?

    HERE ARE THE SETTINGS:-

    RES: 2540
    FREQ: 175

    ANGLE ON CYAN 75*
    ANGLE ON MAG 45*


    PLEASE HELP

    What application is outputting the postscript?

      We use Apogee here. Your gradation is banding? I've had problems with gradients going to zero. Try setting it to at least 1% and maybe instead of 98% try 100%. This has helped me fix gradients in Quark. How was the gradient created also helps to figure it out.

          Try changing gradient from 0% to 1 or 2% and see what happens.

            Do what jim says and make sure everything from the printer setup all the way through says 2450 and 175. As well MAYBE change the screen angles to within 15 degrees of each other. This banding is it on screen or on the print?

              can barely see it on the screen but it's very noticeable when printed.

                  no its not!! Any other ideas? If i print it as a photoshop JPEG as opposed to an EPS will it make any difference do you think.

                    What ppd are you printing to to create the postscript? Have you printed at that high a line screen before on this printer?
                    No the jpeg will do nothing...can you create the background in pshop and blur ever so slightly?

                      the ppd is express scitex. We've found out that our RIP is running to postscript level 2 and quark recommends printing to level 3. we know we've printed graduated tints on this before so how can we get quark to print to level 2 instead?

                          Sorry if my brain is going soft on this.( just did my weight training.... groceries)
                          The gradient in the back ground is in Quark? I remember years ago having to remove it from Quark and creating a big gradient in Photoshop adding noise to it, if I remember correctly. hmmmm did you try the prepress forum?

                          this might sound crazy but have you tried ripping at a lower res? say 1270 and 133?

                            Can your workflow handle PDFs? If so make a PDF and save it down to Acrobat 4 and try that. Or you can make a gradient in illustrator. In photoshop I've had to convert gradients to lab color add noise and blur and convert back to cmyk. The problem is now you have noise in the gradient but eliminates alot of the banding. Thats why I like illy gradients better if the job allows it. You never mentioned whither you removed the 0%.
