  • Great printers for home office? PostScript?

I am looking to replace my 11 year-old HP LaserJet 5MP with a new monochrome laser printer. I print a lot of graphics (Illustrator EPS and InDesign) and graphic and text quality is more important to me than speed. Can anyone recommend some good ones for under $1k?

I do a lot of book design too, and I'd like the option of printing color pages for my clients to review. I would assume that the text quality on color laser printers isn't as good as monochrome ones and, therefore, I should get a separate color printer for this purpose. Is this a correct assumption? If so, could you also throw some color laser printer recommendations my way, as well? Are color laser printers generally cheaper to operate than inkjet ones?

It's been SO long since I've purchased a printer I'm not quite sure what the latest requirements are with PostScript compatibility anymore and if I need to specifically seek this out when purchasing a printer. I've asked my fellow designers and have gotten different stories. Any PostScript smarties out there willing to share his/her wisdom?

That's a lot of questions, I know, but I've been saving them up! Thanks in advance for your tips. I look forward to reading them.

There is a printer review thread somewhere ... but I don't think there is much in there.

Some advice is profound, some is clever. The above post is a good example of both.
