I know some wide format printers want files in RGB rather than CMYK - what is the reason for this?

Some of the printing technologies used by wide format printers can give you a better gamut of colours than those from CMYK. If working from RGB the gamut isn't restricted as it would be in CMYK. Always ask your printer first. -

Ahhh...then I am assuming wide format can reach a wider gamut because some have the orange & green ink in addition to the other 4?Comment

There is an RGB print process. Continuous tone prints done by a Durst Lambda or Cymbolic Sciences Lightjet use RGB lasers to expose the various films. The film is processed just like photographic paper. Images should be RGB but always ask about color mode when using Illustrator, etc. They might surprise you and say CMYK. I have a couple vendors who do it that way.
Most inkjet type machines are CMYK. Some print vendors apply their own custom color curves so they will take either RGB or CMYK for inkjet output. Others with less strict color management want CMYK.

Not commonly.
Usually the standard 8 color (CMYKcmyk) or Fast-4 if an 8-head machine (CMYKCMYK). 6-head only has CMYKcm. 4-head machine is obvious (CMYK)
(Small letters stand for 'light')
Each inkjet has its own gamut depending on the inkset. Pigment inks (which is what you want) tend to have a narrower gamut than dye base. Lambda has a completely different gamut altogether. Making everything match sux.Comment
