  • Problem with printing to PostScript/PDF

    #1
    Hello everyone.

This is my first post at this forum.. please be kind.

I am a web designer, new to the world of printing. I am currently working with Illustrator and I am attempting to print my work to a Generic Color PostScript Printer. I have installed the appropriate drivers and downloaded a whole bunch of PPDs for different printers. So far, so good. Now, when I go to Print in Illy, go to Separation Setup... select the appropriate PPD... click OK.

After opening the created file- all the graphicsare in grayscale... why is that?

I've tried to search online if anyone had a similar problem, but to no avail... has anyone seen this before?

    Thanks,
    Ilia.

You are saving as PDF when you make the seperations? I beleive that the seps always show grayscale in PDF format. I could be wrong but I think that is the case. They print in grayscale bc they are used to make the plates for CMYK so there is no need for them to be in color.

Yes what D-Zine said. Seps are always in grayscale because the press and ink provides the color.

Venga what exactly are you trying to do?
        Print to a desktop printer?
        Save to pdf?
        confused.

PrintDriver is a large format digital print dude. His advice/opinions may not apply to the 4color/offset/web world of printing

Sorry guys, let me clear up my question....

I am using Illy to design a big poster (~40x90in). The printers asked me to include color separations (and printer marks - reg. marks, star targets etc.). I was under the impression that the way to achieve this is to use a Generic Color PostScript Printer and to print the poster to file. When I open the Print menu, and go into Separations Setup I can include Printer Marks (and choose a PPD corresponding to the printer). But the file that I get is in grayscale. Is there another way of getting a color 'print preview' with the used colors and printer marks? ...

            Thanks guys.

What the printer is asking for is a printout of the color seps so they can compare and make sure it separates correctly before sending to press. They will always be gray, If you want a composite (all colors) with registration marks. Print it without separations selected. Your composite wont list the colors used. That is what the seps are for. Any designer should do this before sending files to print just to make sure there are no spot colors if the job is CMYK or that there are no CMYK colors if it's a spot color only job.
