  • Printing a t-shirt

    #1
    High!
Im about to enter a t-shirt designing competition and I wonder if there is anything I need to think about when it comes to the use of colours, fonts etc, in order to get a good printing quality (if my contribution would win)?

For example, does anybody know how the metall (gold) colours in Illy look on a t-shirt?

You need to specify the inks are metallics. Otherwise PMS 800 series golds print as puke yellow and silvers print as grays.

    Damned expensive to screen metallics

If you use metallics you have to do spot art. You can't print metallics in the new Direct-To-Tshirt printers so you can't use 4-color art.

Convert your fonts to curves. (shift command O)

I hope the prize is something worthwhile to you (IF you win) or the organization is something you care to donate time. Glory is not enough.

How many shirts would you be printing? Most printshops won't screen print the shirt if you're only getting one printed. It takes too much time and work to do the color separation and screen burning for just one shirt. They would most likely do a digital print. Digital prints don't come out as vibrant as a screen print would, but they are able to print a wider variety of designs (more complicated designs), for cheaper.

Many metalic options are out there - including metalic foiling. There are so many options, and of course the base colour affects everything.

There are some cool effects you can achieve though - by panel printing the garments prior to make up so you get a full bleed effect... to discharge printing, the works - there are alot of options, it really depends on who and where you're having it printed.

Thanks a lot for the help!

For example I did´nt think about making curves of the fonts, and really nice tips about the metallics.

If I would win I guess they´ll work something out with the printers, but I´ll probably make one more design without metallics on it and a little more simple design just in case, and for kicks =).

It´s a small competition advertised in a blog, and the only specifications was a text that needs to be in it, nothing more. The prize IS the glory, and a couple of t-shirts=)

And what do they get with your design?
            Are they selling the shirts?

Glory isn't enough to enter a contest where someone else gets the loot.

It is a Swedish MMA-fighter that wants a new "entrance t-shirt" for his next bout in the UFC, which he and his entourage will wear. And maybe they will sell a (very) limited edition of the t-shirt.

I´m very fresh when it comes to graphic design and I also root for this guy, being glad to "help him out", so I´m fine with the honors if I would win (plus a pair of t-shirts =). Of course, when I get more experience I´ll charge more than the glory for my work.
