I'm asking this question because I often get files from my companies clients that have DCS files in/with them. For my part I leave them formatted the way they are and send them on to our printers. Some of them are Illustrator EPS files, some of them are Quark and some are InDesign. I have seen files with the DCS files on a seperate layer (often turned off and locked) with PSD files also placed so they can be printed on Laser printers and look OK and I have seen seperate files one for Laser printing (with PSd files) and one for press (with DCS files). I have never had a problem before yesterday, but a printer missed the note (on the artwork)to use the DCS file and printed a spot color in 4 color process instead. Nobody caught it during approval (I'm not involved in that process, but that is another topic all together) and it went to press wrong. I'm not blaming anyone here I just want to know is there any standard for formatting this type of 5, 6, 7 color printing? Should the PSD and DCS file be contained in the same file? Your thoughts are greatly appreciated.
