  • Business Card Layout Template help

    #1
I just got a job working for a printer that does all the business cards for the doctors in the area because they're all joining into a network. They have their own graphic designers so we don't do any card design, and they deal with a few other printers so we can't ask them to make files specifically for us.

    The workflow goes like this:
    1. We get the files uploaded to our ftp server. We get a PDF that has the crop marks and bleeds set up.
    2. We import that PDF into InDesign and place 24 cards up on 12x18. To make all the cards fit we have to put them close together and move the bounding boxes up, down, left or right to clean up any crop marks since they overlap.

    3. We duplicate the page and then do the back. And we have to import EVERY SINGLE ONE by relinking, finding the pdf and importing page 2. So instead of doing it one time, we have to do it 24 times.

If we used this method of importing into an already layed out page we would have to do this 48 times if it were front and back.

Do any of you have templates set up to do this so I can get this done with a few clicks. I feel like this shouldn't take the 10-15 mins that it does. Any suggestions?

Are you placing 24 of the same card on each 12 x 18, or are they all different, or what?

Make one container at 3-1/2 x 2 inches, import the card & press CMD-SHFT-E to center. That should take care of the crops.

Then use the Step & Repeat function to copy across and down to fill the page.

        Same on the back.

We're getting closer. That tip was perfect for a one page template.
I failed to be clear about the PDF's come with 2 pages in the one document. Pg.1= BC Front, Pg.2= BC Back.
So we have to "show import options" and select page 2 for the remaining 24. These also have bleeds.

You might be able to set up a data merge using this:
            http://indesignsecrets.com/data-merging-part-2.php
follow the instructions for creating a container for the PDF image being linked.

Whoa, nice find PD. i like the comments discussion, especially:

You can easily split up a multiple page PDF into individual PDFs in Acrobat Pro. Also I’m pretty sure there’s a script that will do from InDesign (sorry can’t put my hands on it right now).

                  Solved

Figured it out. Need to extract the pages in the PDF's that are sent in Acrobat. Made a template (.indt) so I won't save over it. Cut my prepress time down to about 10-15 seconds versus 5 minutes.

Thanks again PD, I can't wait to WOW my boss next time I need to use that Data Merge option. He's not a graphic person and I don't think the other two people I work with even know about it.

Practice with it a bit. It can be very frustrating to use sometimes (data has to be stored properly.) It's even worse if you are under a deadline.
                    Happy to help.
