  • Recommend books about Style Guides?

    #1
I want to teach my coworkers about design and style guides. I've just started a new job at a place that desperately needs one. However they are all fairly unfamiliar with the concept. I myself am a novice with the issue having handled style guides and worked off them in other places. I'm looking for something may explain what it is and/or offer advice on how to structure one. By style guide I'm referring to rules about color schemes, typography, etc. It all falls under branding so maybe that's what I need to focus on.

Can anyone recommend resources or books on the topic? Thanks in advance.

You failed to read my post and I failed to clarify. I'm talking about style guides from a graphic design and marketing perspective.

You realise that book is 900 pages? It covers; bookmaking, style, and production and printing.

Can you give me specific examples of what you're looking to get guides on?

I want to put together a style guide in house for the assets and properties we handle. However my coworkers are unfamiliar with what a style guide is, how it can help us and what could look like. We deal with a number of brands in house without any consistency, colors, attention to details, typography, etc. I believe my coworkers just need a little more information on why these things are important so I'm looking for a book. We're a non-profit.

I am unfamiliar with the Chicago Manual so I was under the impression it has more to do with literature and editing manuscripts.

Instead of just a book about them, do some searching for actual Style Guides and Branding Guides for companies out on the web. There are a decent number of them for downloading, you just need to search wisely

Here's a thread from a while back about 'em: http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/fo...ad.php?t=31726

You'll also want to search Brand Standards and Graphic Standards. there are tons of them available on the net, both in html and PDF downloads.
