      Cool thread. Been looking into this lately too. I'm just waiting until the day comes when I'll be asked to design a version of our magazine for the iPad.

            Pathfinder as PD said. Create all of your shapes (don't worry about over and under yet) ... then select all and divide, then grab the "bits" that need to be connected and unite them.
