This is a concept that's been around for a while -- I had first seen it around 1999. The application behind it is supposed to figure out how popular or active each item is and then maps the page to give it a proportionate amount of space.

This site is doing it for Google News but I have seen others that compare a bunch of websites in the same field.

It's visually striking but after a while you think, well, what's the point?
