  • Design communication degree interview help!

    Hi all,

I am new here and i am just really desperate for some help now.
I applied for a Bachelor of Arts in Design Communication, and went for the interview with my portfolio.
They replied me today and told me that I have failed and asked me for a resubmission of my portfolio for re-assessment.
I asked for further comments on why my portfolio couldn't make it and they told me the comments were that I have weak composition and my style of aesthetic could be improved.
Can anyone tell me how I can improve my portfolio with better composition and aesthetic ? I am so confused and lost.

// My portfolio is mainly web and graphic design, and cute looking illustrations. Is that why its weak ?

We can't really help you unless you provide us your portfolio.

Do you have a link? Or a few images you could upload?

The bright side in all of this, sounds like you picked a great school. A school that requires a portfolio submission for their design program and doesn't just take anyone who likes MS Paint; sounds like a school where you will learn something about design.

The thing about graphic design in general is that it is NOT about YOUR ART. It is about what you can do for a client.
If you just have cute illustrations, your apparent aesthetic may not be coming across as appropriate for client work (though I would argue that some clients do indeed need ''cute'' illustration from time to time.) The composition of those cute illustrations could be your fail, but hard to tell without seeing them.
As for your web and graphic design, post up some things. If you are talking about things like gamer sigs and web avatars and the like, you are going to have issues anywhere regarding composition and aesthetics.

Post up some work. We aren't shy about commenting.

To expand a little on what B said. Those monograms were hand created. They weren't just a font, and there's no software that will automatically squeeze them into a shape like that....

Not sure where you got those sizes. I would try this always up to date google doc with various social media pixel sizes.
