I'm new here and a high school senior. This fall I'll be heading to college and majoring in Virtual Tech and Design. I know I'm going to need a laptop and I've done some research on them. I would also get an external monitor. What would you guys suggest computer wise for someone starting out? Any other essential items I should get as well?

    What is your budget?

Consider that you are probably going to be running the Adobe Creative suite. While they only recommend 4 gigs of Ram, I highly suggest you get as much ram as you can afford. 16gigs if you can. Check whether the laptop you intend to buy is upgradable. Some are not so you can't add ram later if you need it.

The bigger the onboard hard drive the better. For the Adobewares, you need lots and lots of free space. Consider keeping at least 1/3 of your onboard drive free and clear for scratch. If you need room for music and movies, use an outboard storage device.

Consider a backup drive. Nothing sucks worse than dropping your laptop in a puddle the day after you pulled an all nighter to finish all of your semester projects. There are any number multi-terabyte mini-drives out there that can backup your laptop four-fold, not just your client work.

Comment on Looking for the graphic designer of a certain graphic
I'm a creature of necessity. A lot of times the end client will want an actual signed release and a real photo credit, so you have to attempt to find the artist.

Reply to Work from UK for an US company
All I can suggest is consult a tax expert in the UK. If your company doesn't mind you moonlighting like this, maybe they could suggest someone for you.

I do business with people in the UK a lot. Because the gig they hire us for is going to be in the US, they time shift their design staff so they are available during US Eastern Time. It's the only way...
