Hey all, I'm working on a logo for an open source Sim City style game project called Metropolis. I've come up with a basic design I like, but I'm stuck on a few secondary things. I wanted to go for a slightly Art Deco look while still getting the "city" part in there; Here's the basic shape:

My main question is if I should add an "M" to the design, like this:

Beyond that, I'm not sure what to do about the color scheme; so far I'm liking either silver:

    or gold:

or maybe even something a little more colorful:

What does everyone think? Thanks for your feedback!

Quite like the concept. However, surely the 'M' should follow the perspective of the building? Not look like it's an 'M', just plonked on the graphic?

How about office windows, all turned off, except some still turned on. The one's turned on make the shape of the M.

        Or something.

        good start.

Great idea!!!! I do like the basic concept here though. The beginnings are really good. Can't wait to see how it turns out.

As others have said, making the M angle toward the vanishing point is a must. I also like the idea of using windows to make the M, but I would be careful to not make the design too busy because I think the simplicity is a strength in your design. On that note, I think you need to maintain the high contrast you have in the Black and white version. If you want to make it multi-color, I think you need to use different colors.

Wow, thanks for all the great responses guys!

I see what you mean with the M... the irony is that it actually is in perspective, because the font on it has a capital M whose sides slope inwards; maybe it does look a bit disjointed, though... then again, I'm worried that if I put a straight-sided M in perspective it will look like one of those top-heavy "spooky" fonts... guess I'll have to try it and see. One thing I do like about the current M is that it kind of gives the impression of an old '20s hood ornament

I like that windows idea, but would it work on a small scale? I'm thinking it might be a bit hard to see what's going on at say, 50x50 px. But hey, I'll give it a shot and see how it goes!

And thanks for the color advice! I'm starting to lean towards a simple grayscale too...

I'll try out a couple variations and post some more later! Thanks again!

I can't visualize it completely yet myself, but I'm just considering if the view from 180° around the back of the present view, could be made to look such, that the two smaller buildings, and the slop of their roofs, (which would then be fully visible), couldn't be made to create the letter M in and of themselves, without, like the others said, adding more details and making the image a bit too busy. I realise that the taller building dominating the foreground, as you have it, is probably best though.

Looks like a good start! My fav is the last one with the orange but I think pairing the orange with black would give it more contrast and make it pop. If it looks too Halloweeny, you could change it to a nice lime green or the gold you have in the one before.

I agree with the opinion that the windows might make it look too busy. I just recently worked on an urban logo where they wanted to use buildings and I just couldn't get the windows to work while keeping with the simplicity I needed. Plus, small scale renderings of the logo would be problematic.

I would love to see what you end up with. BTW, when does this game come out? =D

Looks like everyone was right! I changed the typeface on the M to make the perspective less weird, and I definitely think it looks better (also matches the typeface for the title text.) I played around with the "lighted windows" idea a bit but I couldn't come up with anything that suggested an M while still being large enough for clarity... think I'll have to stick with it as is.

Also, narrowed it down to two color schemes: straight grayscale, or grayscale with just a hint of orange:

Also started playing around with some text... What do you guys think?

(@lweedop: wish I knew! Unfortunately it's little more than a twinkle in the eye at the moment Here's my blog on the subject, if you're interested!)

Much better. My favorite is the 2nd one. It maintains the simplicity and high contrast while adding orange to make it pop more, fixes the perspective problem with the M, and adds appropriate text. You did a good job choosing the fond, it is consistent with the simplicity of the graphic, and the extra long lowercase p and j give a good feeling of a long way down like in the graphic. Only issue is slight alignment issues, maybe you could make the p a little shorter or the j a little longer so that they match up, and them align the bottom of the smaller text with the bottom of the p and j.

Unfortunately, both designs say nothing to me. Not being Christian or into romance novels I would never even look at them. Objectively...
