  • Clockworks - what do you see?

    #1
This logo is for a foreign company called CLOCKWORKS in their language.

(I havent got the job, not yet anyway, but since I dont have a portfolio yet, I am just taking a few real life jobs and using them as a means to build up some experience and get a portfolio. If I get the job, good, if not at least I'm learning something along the way and getting some examples to show in future). Catch 22, no portfolio - no work, no work - no portfolio.

Ive included a word us English speakers would recognise just to give a clue to whats happening.

So, once youve seen whats written, could you please tell me what you see.

After that, I will say what its meant to be, then once thats out of the way you can goto town on me!

Doing work before you get the job is a good way to do the work and not get paid for it.
I understand the need for work in a portfolio to get work but aren't there any local charities you could offer your pro bono services to instead?

Without knowing what this company does, who their target customer is, where they are located, what their competition is...can't tell you if that logo is going to work.
The "i" looks naked without its eyeball. It does look like a sundial, if that is what you were shooting for. Not exactly 'clockwork' which conjures up gears and annoying chirping birds.

Good thinking about the charity thing. I hadn't thought of that.

Well, the translation issue means I don't know if reloj actually means clock like we know it, ie gears etc, or does it mean anything that tells the time? eg an egg timer?

So regarding the sun dial, I thought it was the most basic time telling device ever used, while the elliptical shapes, (very vaguely) was similar to planetary orbits, the most fundamental yet most amazing, precision timepiece ever.

Yea, I did play around with the DOT on the "i". When it was there, along with the DOT on the "J" it didnt look good, it doesnt look good without it, and if I take away the DOT from "J" and put one on the "i" it makes it imbalanced.

I also tried inverting the large ellipse so it faded away at the back edge, but then the whole thing looked like a tiara.

I dont fully understand how to go about purchasing a font which can be sold on within a logo, so I just created the font out of my head. I was surprised when it was finished how closely it resembled an existing font, but I honestly didn't copy it.

Must play around a bit with that DOT thing, maybe it can be a moon!

Just a side note that the ladies dont like to hear, the word cosmos in greek means order, while its opposite is chaos.

So when the missus goes to put on her cosmetics, we know she is trying to put the chaos into order

Just added the DOT and corrected the distorted aspect ratio I saved in by mistake last time.

You brought up the word for no reason though.

                  Weird.

I wasn't very accuratate in my explanation.

I was referring to the cosmos being the magnificent timepiece.

cosmos is the Greek for order
chaos is the Greek for disorder
cosmetics has its root in "cosmos", ie organisation.

                    Sorry for the confusion

I'm not sure what this logo is doing. Is that supposed to be a clock?

I really don't read the 'j' in the word.

Just a sundial with a shadow.

Thanks for that. Youve convinced me. I thought it was a bit vague, but its good to get it seconded.

I just cobbled up another idea roughly to see how it looked.

It looks a bit like how jewellery would be presented on a cushion.

Looks a bit like a crown.

I know the gear teeth profiles need tidied up, but the attachment is just for quick preview.

                              Any thoughts?
