  • Audio Dept. logo

I got a commission to revamp this company's identity. Here is my first concept for their new logo. This version is based on their current one in that I kept with the EQ bars as a theme. What do you guys think so far? I'm developing a couple of other concept that are completely different but I wanted to kick this one around first.

by the way, the company does sales and rentals of professional audio and recording equipment for the film industry. Boom mics, mixers, sound carts and such.

    Crit away!

It's not a terrible logo, but it's only average at best. The image and the name don't mesh, and are dull. One doesn't stylistically reflect the other. The equaliser is just a bunch of lines, where really you want to be integrating the idea of an equaliser into the logo as/or part of the wordmark. And let's face it, it's hardly stunningly original, which is no crime, but it's both flat and unoriginal. Do you plan to be able to use them separately?

I'm not too keen on it either, it's very bland, which isn't always a bad thing if utilized correctly.

The type and Icon don't really flow together too well at the minute, maybe try the far left EQ bar the same height as the text and flow it downwards?

how about using another base image as an icon? (please please don't use headphones lol)

I get the notion of the equalizer, but that's been done.. much like SAB206 said about the headphones. Reminds me of the new Cisco logo, even though that's supposed to be a bridge. Also reminds me of a cheap car stereo installation company.

Where's the department? What's the old concept look like? Can you post your roughs?

The equalizer could be anything - hardware manufacturers, recording studio, general sound rentals, car stereo installers, record label... you can do better.

They rent equipment for film, use THAT in the logo. Put in a boom mic.

Thanks for the response. I'm not entirely crazy about this one either. But, I wanted something that was close to what they already have just as an option. For some reason I'm feeling really stuck on this job too. I can't get inspired! I mean aside from headphones, EQ bars and microphones what else says "audio"? Guh.

              1. Eardrums.
2.The thing it shows you in cartoons, down people's throats, (I forget the name epi-something or other I think).
              3. Diaphragms.
              4. Waveforms.
              5. Davy crotchets, minims etc, maybe being transformed into binary / analogue, and captured.
              6. AC wave generated by MIC, deliverde to Speaker.
              7. Some electonic symbol used in amplifier / speaker circuit diagrams, Google KISLER and you'll see what I mean.

I think there's loads of scope for what you have to do.

British to American dictionary: "crotchets, minims etc." == "Musical notes"

The "drumskin" on your eardrum, is a diaphragm, of sorts.

diaphragm n. 1 muscular partition between the thorax and abdomen in mammals. 2 = *Dutch cap. 3 a Photog. plate or disc pierced with a circular hole to cut off marginal beams of light. b vibrating disc in a microphone, telephone, loudspeaker, etc. 4 device for varying the lens aperture in a camera etc. 5 thin sheet as a partition etc. [Greek phragma fence]

                        AD Logo Update

Here's version 2.0 of my AD logo. How does this look? I got inspired with a microphone.

i like the first one best the lower case text is easier to read. i would like to see the mark in between the text like the other ones also. this one is leaps and bounds better IMO, more original and interesting.

the horseshoe could be a pop filter or just something to fill out the mark better. either way i like it better than the first sample.

This is my pen tool. There are many like it, but this one is MINE. My pen tool is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. My pen tool without me is useless. Without my pen tool, I am useless.

there is no grey area when it comes to 1 color logos.

Thanks. HAHA! Well I felt I needed some sort of container for the microphone so I think it also looks like the female end of an audio jack connector. Check out the photo. I went a did a quickie photoshoot of the supply closet at the business for some inspiration.

I didn't want to make it a full circle because I kind of like the open negative space it creates. It allows the microphone to stand out a bit more.

When doing window clings you have to specify
                                - white cling or clear cling or frosted cling.

It's being printed with an inkjet so it will use multiple colors of ink to arrive at the PMS color (or as close as possible).

But specifying it as a PMS color will give the printer a target...

Thanks Ratkins, that's a good point. I have never been instructed to create a white ink and I only ever use Paper, I guess for some reason I was thinking of Paper as overprinting, when of course it knocks...

On a window cling it is possible that the white would be white ink. I'd make sure the production manager understands what you want. It's not 4/C, anyway....
