  • Graphic Design and Illustration. Feedback please!

    #1
Hi everyone, I am fairly new to this forum. But I've been getting more comfortable with the idea of posting my work on forums lately to get user feedback.

I am 20 years, illustration and graphic design student living in California. I mostly draw and paint but I LOVE graphic design and I hope to do it professionally one day.

Here are some work that I've been done in both fields:

Heres a graphic design I just made for a recent contest project I'm working on to try and get money for tuition (God know I need it!):

Below are also some illustrations I do if anyone is interested. Enjoy!

    Welcome aboard!!

When you have a moment, please have a read through these important threads with the rules, FAQs and some background on our lingo and inside jokes.

Is it my imagination or are all the illustrations the same?

wow your painting skills are sweet! i really dig that last one, is it charcoal and pastels?

your first graphic isn't really graphic design, more digital art for lack of a better term. graphic design usually has a purpose IE: selling something or showing information in and easy to digest fashion. if you really dig graphic design study up on the fundamentals and i think you should be well on your way. you obviously have the artistic talent.

          welcome to the GDF btw!

            Excellent drafting skills!

And yes, the example of "Graphic Design" you posted is really more of "abstract art."

The fact that you used 'graphic design tools' to create it, doesn't really make it graphic design.

The portraits was a alla prima 5 hours live model session.
Top one is oil and the last one is charcoal pencil. The middle was just a page out of my sketchbook.

Thanks for the feedback! I'm actually trying to "sell" this graphic art piece to Brisk right now through one of their extended-college projects via facebook. (www.facebook.com/liptonbrisk) They're looking for a new graphic art piece by new designers to put on their bottles. Not sure if you still consider it graphic design if it has any commercial value. But I'm also taking classes right now in Type and Design. Learning about different fonts and what they express, different weights and grids and all that.. but I'm sure it goes wayyy deeper than that. But I'm loving it so far!

Thank you for a warm welcome :]. Cheers!

You should check out the thread on 'competition' work, very interesting especially if you are starting out.

You've got some skills though, if you need money try getting your work out there rather than hoping for a competition win.

You definitely have a lot of artistic skill. I agree you should try to sell your work and not enter competitions for the money.
