  • Clothing Logo.

    #1
    Quick bit of background:

This is a school project I did last year, in which we were able to write our own brief. The logo is for a fictional Australian extreme sports apparel brand (skateboards, snowboards, surfboards, clothing etc.)

The brief was to keep the logo true to it's Australian heritage, but it also had to come across as a "premium" or "exclusive" brand.

This is the logo I came up with:

It isn't perfect... I like the kookaburra and crown symbol, but I'm not sure on the type. I'd like to tweak this a bit with your guidance. So fire away.

While we're here, this is a skateboard deck design I did last night (just in case you wanted an idea of how the logo could be applied to stuff):

I think the crown needs more space from your bird shaped jumper. I think the use of white space is quite cool, actually. On your board design, why have you broken the logo off from the crest when you're displaying it as one for crit? It works fine as a combo mark, no need to break it apart?

Sorry should've mentioned that. I also designed the logo so the elements could work as one, and individually. This just makes it more versatile, for different applications.

I think 261311 meant that the crown is too close to the top of the bird's head - I agree, the white space between them is a little thin, especially when you shrink the logo down for, say, business cards.

The text could use some work - the bottom curl on the C isn't very smooth, and I think the r could curve back to mimic the curve of the C maybe, instead of that odd little tick. And maybe work on the e and s - they're a little far apart.

I like the use of white space too - maybe you could sneak in a small shape into the inside of the bird? I almost see a person skateboarding in there. But too much might be, well, too much. Give it some play.

        Lookin good!

It's very common for companies to have different versions of their logo. You just have to be wary that it may hurt you recognizability/brand loyalty for a relatively unknown company.

However I think it could look really nice if you let the bird stand as the 'bug' of the logo and have the company name underneath or to the side. As far as the type, it look ok, but I think where the 'C' meets the 'r' needs to be fine-tuned.

It feels weighted to the right to me. The thick strokes of the mark dominate against the thin stroke of the type. Solid concept though.

I actually really like this but my one comment in seeing the type apart from the logo (bird) is that it feels very unbalanced in the sense that there seems to be a lot of emphasis on the "C" in Crest. Together they look good though

Thanks for your replies, certainly encouraging.

I'll give it some work and update later.

My initial point, just more detailed. Your initial logo looks thoroughly designed as one, whereas broken apart (I feel) they are not. To add to this, the tail/ feet is completely different than it is inside your combo mark.

Ok, before I do anything major to this... thoughts on this layout?

The only bit that is different is the tail/wing bit at the back. I didn't think this was a major issue, the bird looks a bit unfinished without it when it's alone.

I liked the original. My qualm with changing the tail when you have it set in with your type and then on its own is you now have two different logos, they aren't the same elements if they're not in some respect identical once broken.

                        Ok I can appreciate that.

Do you think this works better then?

Yeah not so crazy on the bird being above the logo in post #10, the "Crest" part would be incredibly small at smaller sizes.

I like it plain and simple like that. I feel like you could use the image of just the bird as your logo and then the "Crest+Bird" as your logotype. I would not use "Crest" alone as it doesn't balance properly.

I would say make sure the letters are at the same angle, feels like the s is about to fall over a bit. smooth them out as micro said and its pretty solid.

also.. I think the logo and identity you're going for here would be better applied to a snowboard template.
