  • Another Crack at a Personal Logo

    #1
Okay, so I finally realized I'd married the spaceman and realized it was time for a divorce. So I started pushing myself to sketch out new ideas. At first, I wanted to do some Art Deco. Then, the simplest idea yet hit me: use Greek letters delta and beta for The Dan Ball Brand. I liked the artistic possibilities the delta brought to the table. It's a triangle, which resembles a pyramid, a mountain, or the top of an arrow that's pointing up. It's also the strongest shape. On top of all that, it might be the coolest-looking shape. Unfortunately, the Greeks just used a "B" for beta. So I decided to put the "B" inside the delta and play around with it. At first, I had some issues figuring out what kind of typeface to use for the beta, but then I decided to create my own, which is flavored by the typography Bob Peak created for his Star Trek poster designs.

Anyhoo, since my last thread sparked a debate about paper vs. tablet sketches, I've provided a PNG of sketches I created in Photoshop. Also, I wanted to make a rough design in Illustrator, just to see how the basic idea would translate. Overall, I'm not liking it. I think the delta-beta is a great way to go, but I just haven't figured out the right way to present it.

    What are your impressions?

        Footballs aren't circles.

OKAY maybe when viewed from a specific angle they are

Actually, a circle's not that bad. I just don't want to use the image of a ball for my logo, even though I was trying to do a globe at one point. With the last name Ball, I pretty much hate any visual association you make with my name. Wish I had the last name Fightmaster. Or Schwarzenegger. Ball is a little better than Butts, I guess.

If I used a circle, I'd probably put a ring around the delta, with text on it like I did with the spaceman design. The only problem with that is I feel like I do rings too much. If you're doing a crest it's fine, but not everyone wants/needs a crest or a ring. Yeesh, I'm indecisive.

Cliche means overused, not poorly used.

I actually meant to say that translating my last name into a ball/circle was cliché to me. "Oh, it's so funny. Your name's Ball. Bouncy, bouncy!" "Hey, Balls!" Heard all that jazz far too many times in my life. As far as a logo's concerned, I'd just assume my last name was Brillstein, Buñuel, Benson, Bach, etc.

Saying a circle is cliche seems like saying air is cliche, or a rectangle is cliche for biz cards, or 4 wheels on a car is cliche, or 2 legs on a person is cliche.

If one focal circle isn't desirable, I see quite a few smaller circles in "dan ball brand".

But it's not - It's ball! Go with it! Make a great lookin' ball! Or creative circle(s). I wish our engineering firm's name or type of business had something so ready-made we could capitalize on.

I have no idea why the NASA logo keeps popping up on these "best logo" lists. It's really not a good logo. Imagine the kind of critiques it would get if someone posted it on here (and we were seeing it for the first time).

Here's another concept I've tried. I really like this. It seems like it could actually be a cattle brand...

Have you tried drinking 2 beers, then go at it? Seems like you're over-thinking it, which is def what I do. My friend always calls me The Investigator because I can't just accept something; always gotta analyze, calculate, investigate, superfocus on it. For me it never seemed to come up with any good logos.

I whole-heartedly support the 2 beer theory =) May I suggest Leffe Blonde?

Not sure if it helps, but when I start sketching (after doing tons of research) I often end up with 20-30 pages of thumbnail sketches, few of which are similar visually. I just try to get down every possibility that I can imagine, have another beer, then keep going. Focusing on variety rather than variation might help at this point.

Once you get down to a few really strong possibles, then work on variation, iteration and refinement.

                            Hope that helps, cheers!

Sully gave a great pointer when he said get a bunch of cheap legal pads and do your sketches on them. Somehow doing that makes it so unserious, and I can let it flow more freely. I'm just doodling.
