  • What brochure cover works best?

    #1
I'm designing a landscape B5 16pp brochure for a black tie gala event and need help choosing the best cover design.

The client is a new arts theatre venue and they're throwing a big party to help raise money for the venture.

The cover will be printed silver foil logo on 350gsm black colourplan card, finished with a red paper 'belly-band'. I just can't decide whether to do something bold and interesting with the logo and have a large abstract crop of it running across the whole cover ... or play it safe with a more conventional design. What works best for you?

    OPTION 1

Closed cover with belly band in place:

Front and back cover, belly band removed:

    OPTION 2

Front and back with belly band:

    Thanks!

Nice work. My vote is to go with "Bold and Interesting".

Shearing the typeface is visually engaging in itself but masking the text into the folded format forces your viewer to further engage themselves in the work.

And it doesn't bother you that when the cover is closed you only read 'RK' and a very small bit of the 'A'? That's my only concern really.

Looking at a suitable bodycopy font to mix with Futura Bold headings for the inner pages, I'm thinking a slab serif like Museo Slab or PMN Caecilia. I know it's a corporate black tie event but would rather avoid a traditional looking serif like Baskerville and use something slightly more modern ... thoughts? (nb: we've not established the house brand bodycopy font yet and I'm free to treat this as a standalone bit of print).

        Thanks

PMN Caecilia works for me. Museo is a bit too dark.

It bothers me a little the the cover says RK, therefore option 2 is better. It will also be considerably cheaper to foil. That's if your printer charges foil blocks by size.

            PMN Caecilia it is

The foil cost will be the same for either design.

I'm equally concerned that Option 2 is a little 'safe' for a new edgy theatre/arts venue and the logo gets lost behind the belly band

Perhaps have the front logo larger so that it can still be seen with the belly band? It would be a shame to have it covered completely.

Rather than a belly band, could you place the text in black within lighter areas (ie running vertically within the 'K', or reverse it out of the black?

I really like the use of the tight crop - its visually very interesting and I think it will engage well with the target audience. Playing it safe is boring - push the boat out a bit!

Id suggest you to go with the bigger typeface, Since the already band indicates about the event.
                  Also it looks good.

Well here she is! I went big and bold in the end so thanks for all feedback... very useful The gala night itself was a huge success and the theatre raised well over £100,000!

These are just some rough shots which i'll improve on next week with more photo's of the inside spreads:

What process did you use for the silvering? was it a heat lamination rather than a foil blocking? I think the final product looks brilliant.

No it was straight forward foil blocking... Philips Foils DX K1 ZX 10 silver on GF Smith Colourplan card to be exact. Hat's off to my printer John at TWF Printers who did such a great job with it
