    Hi everyone!

This is my first post here, and I was hoping to get some constructive criticism on my online portfolio – the overall design, usability, portfolio piece choices/order, descriptions, etc. Link here: http://tanyajuliet.com

The purpose of my simple layout was to ensure it didn't detract from my generally colorful design pieces, but now I'm starting to think it's too simple and boring, especially for a graphic designer.

Other input on which design pieces to omit would also be helpful, as I feel I should cut it down to nine pieces or so. I'm also considering taking photographs of some of my posters, and I was wondering if this is actually worth doing to help my portfolio or not. Lately, I've contemplated making it simply a one-page portfolio so users wouldn't have to click around so much, but I'm not sure if this would be better or necessary at all.

Thank you very much for your time and feedback!

Hi buttermochi and welcome to GDF.

We ask all new members to read the threads posted HERE and HERE. They explain how the forum runs, the rules, frequently discussed topics and our inside jokes.

You're right, there's quite a bit of clicking involved. It would be nice if there was a "next project" option so that viewers don't have to keep going back to the portfolio index page.

I found the look quite formal, but the tone quite casual. This could be fine if you were looking for a job at small relaxed studio. But for freelancer work, I think people would like their freelancer or one man band to have more of a professional tone.

I think a one page portfolio would work for your site. You already have all the pieces that could easily go on one page and still have it look good and coherent. I would definitely prefer to see your pieces up front on one page with less clicking and navigating. It would go nicely along with your resume link and contact info on a single page because there's not enough there at the moment to justify putting them all on different pages.

Might I also suggest you choose a different font for your body text? Arial is awesome in that it's super legible. However, it's also kind of bland. At the very least, it seems like an out of place choice for the fun, casual personality that comes through in your writing.

Buda may be right, but I did feel that way at all. It is nice and clean. My favorite type of site. The header is especially nice in which you have done well with the typography style, but your kerning seems a bit off in your name. The only real thing I could find to be critical of was that the picture feels out of place. I think it is the colors for one, since they don't really fit into the site's color scheme, but it also feels like it needs something to connect it to the page more. Maybe a thin boarder like in your portfolio, or a very slight drop shadow or something. Maybe some of the others here will have an idea.

Thanks so much for all that feedback everyone! It's definitely helping as I try to redesign my portfolio.

In particular, could I get some feedback on which portfolio pieces I should keep/eliminate if I'm trying to cut down to only 9 or 12 pieces?

Buda...in reference to your use of the word tone, do I understand correctly that you mean it was casual in the content especially the Hi, and the reference to the Hawaiian sun? Or did you mean something else?

I think you are very close to a finished site. I do somewhat agree with the picture being out of place and I felt your blurb about Hi, my name is....that choice of font did not appear anywhere else. Try it with something from your title/name maybe. I think it would be a little more unified if you replaced it. Anyway, overall nice job. A few tweaks (and isn't that always like 400?) and you'll be there.

Does your blurb read better without the Hi, I'm Tanya? Could it just be, "Some people say I'm bright as the Hawaiian sun?" I find that a little more intriguing, and a great way to lead into a bit about how you work. But ultimately, you get to decide. Keep us posted, okay?

Edited to add: I would spell out Hawaii instead of using HI. Visually, it reads as hi as in hello to me.

Honestly, I can't believe it either... wasn't my choice. What's done is done.

I apologize if I seem brash, but I cant believe a design company went to crowd sourcing for a logo...

This really isn't doing anything for me. In my opinion, the pencil thing is over done. I've joined this forum two weeks ago, and in the time I think I've seen four logos with a pencil in them....

Hmmm...I just assumed it was because I'm a mod that I could reply to closed threads. But perhaps closed threads don't stay closed at all.

                Ok, clean slate.

Not terribly keen on this logo. The look is very heavy and cramped, but going by the kind of work your company does – movie posters, I guess these are generally heavy...

                Hi iceskaley,

Looks like its a cute idea and a good start. Some designs look really good being asymmetrical, and others would look better being centered. So far, the way this looks, it seems...
