  • Catering company logo

    #1
    Hi all,
It would be great to have some feedback for the below two logos, I'm stuck between which one is more effective! It's for a local catering company that is just starting up. Catering for private parties, etc with an emphasis on personal service. Any comments much appreciated, many thanks.

Hi popcorn and welcome to GDF!

When you get settled, we ask that all new members take a few minutes to read through important threads here and here. These will explain our rules, answer frequently asked questions and explain some of the long running jokes you'll run into.

    Enjoy your stay.

kerning is always more difficult when it's not in a straight line, but it has the ability to make the letters appear crooked if it isn't handled correctly. In the first one the "D" in ALMOND looks like it may be a few point size smaller, or maybe it has a black stroke on it that is choking the character.

I think the graphic portion could use a bit of rethinking, the eight almonds are okay, but the pot with the embellishments seems a bit like clip art and gives more of a product feel than a service feel. Have you considered an almond tree or sprig from one?

I don't know if I'd put "Est. 2012" in there. Companies usually put that on their logos when they want their customers to know they've been around for a while and are an established, proven brand.

Thanks for your reply! You're right about that 'D'- should look a bit better now. Do you think the kerning needs a lot of work elsewhere?
I agree with you re the clip art feel, and putting in a sprig.. it works quite nicely!

you may want to reconsider that sprig image... it's a little phallic... and like clip art again.

I never mentioned the kerning issues in my previous post...

KITCHEN isn't bad but the N is a little higher than the K and should be adjusted to match up.

Didn't notice that, this new image is a bit better don't you think? Also looks less clip art to me.
Have played around with the kerning, it's surprisingly difficult to do with the angle of the text, I think it looks better now.
And Sketcher- I see your point about the 'Est. 2012'- I'll have a think about what to do with that!

                  Same here KM.

Because I Google'd almonds (plants, art, clipart, etc..) and I saw the illustrations on several search results.

You might want to make sure (even if you find a "free vector image" of an image that may be owned/drawn by someone else), that you have permission to use it.

                  Just a thought.

Got the first one off openclipart.org and I bought the second off graphicriver.net.

(No worries, I have checked out the licences for both!)

I'd be very surprised if using it in a logo is okay. I don't think I've come across an RF image/illustration that doesn't explicitly say you can't use it as part of a logo.

I just did a quick read through of graphic rivers EULA. It reads like you'll have to pay for the that piece of clip art each time that logo is put on a different piece. (For example, pay GR to legally use it on a business card X number of employees with business cards, pay GR to legally use it on a sign X number of different signs created, pay GR to legally use it in an ad x number of different ads it appears on, etc). You can not put it on apparel and then sell the apparel - even to employees... see where this is going.

Because logo/branding usage is not specifically mentioned in the EULA either as allowed or not allowed, I'd contact the artist directly. Using clip art (and this is clip art) in a logo is open to dilution as everyone else in the world has access to the same art and I seriously doubt said clip art can be trademarked.

If offering this as a real solution for a real client, Cover Thy Ass.

Apologies- I misunderstood the first clause of the agreement which gave me the wrong idea! Have emailed artist direct to ask.

no need to apologies to us, we're just trying to help you understand the EULA's of RF images (most of which are the same).

Your welcome to use the following graphic if you wish. It is not as nice as what you already have, but you can modify it to your heart's content. It is something I have not used, and I just edited it to put the almond on there. I have it in .ai format.

That type in the original post may be a typeface that was custom designed for that logo. But the links above should be a good start to do your own
