Wanting some direction on a project I'm doing for fun to put in my portfolio.

I am absolutely in love with the Fossil Arkitekt watches, so I wanted to pay homage with a typeface (not sure if it will be working type or just a word mark) and a custom display case. The inspiration is from the watch face itself. I think the proportions are beautiful, and the look is clean, bold and modern.

So nothing huge, would just like some feedback and on my progress. These are just sketched thoughts to see if I like the direction it's taking. What I'm kinda stuck on is the capital A's. I don't know what one seems to fit better with the lower case 'a'.

If you guys have any advice on making a typefaces I'd like to hear it. Thanks

I like it. I like how you've been inspired by something other than more typography.

I prefer the A on the right because it is more elegant.

Careful those tails don't flare out. Particularly that e. They'll start looking like they're wearing bellbottoms. Not so elegant.

Thanks Buda. This is my first time doing a custom typeface. Typically, if this was a real job, how long should something like this take? Just the word mark itself?

I love it all!!!!! I want to see more of your work! I agree to its great to see typography inspired by something other than type. I'm a complete typophile! I like the lower case a in the middle.

THANKS GUYS!! hahaha. I'm a little stuck on where to go from here though (remember, first time). So far I've been drawing out the letters super big so work on those little details before I take it to the computer.
When you guys are doing the fonts on screen, do you pen tool around the glyph, or stroke a line so it's a consistant weight?

              Very nice.
I happen to like the 'A' on the left, it matches the rest of the type better IMHO.

I couldn't say how long it takes to design a typeface. I've never designed a full one. I'm guessing that it could take a really long time. Especially if you work out kerning pairs, glyphs and ligatures!

                  I like them!

There's nothing wrong with a mechanical-looking type design, and most every typeface is built around common grids, angles, shapes, etc. However, it's necessary to deviate from those commonalities to counter small optical illusions that inevitably show up.

For example, the "e", you'd think, needs to precisely mirror some of the shapes in the "a", and you've done just that. However, the objective is to make it optically match and harmonize. This involves tweaking things to counter the optical illusions.

Similarly, the "r" is a partial repeat of the "a" and the "e", but a slavish repeat of the shapes causes a big hole beneath the arm of the "r" that makes good kerning with a subsequent glyph nearly impossible. You're probably going to have to shorten that arm just a bit to compensate. It's all about finding just the right degree of compromise.

                  Again, though. I like it.

Thanks <b>. I've been drawing, tracing, redrawing and adjusting again the past few days to find harmony between the characters. Playing with weight, proportions, curvature etc. Upon drawing the lowercase 'a' to a size that allowed me to focus on some details, the slant of the counter did not look good at small sizes, so I've mainly been playing around with that. But I think I've found a shape I can base some geometry on.
