This is a logo I created for my college newspaper called The Gator Gazette. Thoughts? Please be as honest as possible and don't worry about being harsh. I went this far but I don't feel like it's much of a newspaper logo. I would expect to see it on some kind of... energy saving company, not a newspaper. It also feels a little... wanting. Let me know what you guys think. I appreciate any help you can provide.

Hi flavor and welcome to GDF!

We ask that all new members take a few minutes read through important threads here and here. These will explain our rules, answer frequently asked questions and explain some of the long running jokes you'll run into.

    Enjoy your stay.

The first thing I see is you'll probably have problems with this logo if it's printed in just black. The overlapping greens will melt into one solid shape and you may lose your image meaning/definition. Is this a printed newspaper or online?

It's cute and a good idea, but like you said maybe not for a newspaper. I don't think I've ever seen a paper that wasn't treated with a typeface logo. I would keep that idea around though, it may come in handy for something else.

Hello Kitch and Michael. Thank you both for your input. That's a very good point about an all-black logo. I created a grayscale version but it didn't occur to me to do a black version. I assume I would have to use a white stroke to separate the shapes somehow. Some experimentation is in order. The newspaper is online only, though.

I think I might just use it to bulk up my (as of right now) flimsy portfolio but perhaps I won't show it to my Professor. She told me the newspaper contributers felt that there ought to be a gator somewhere in the logo, which is why I attempted to do it this way but I do agree with you, Michael. Maybe I'll try again with something a little more serious, angular and stylized.

          Thank you again!

Did you go straight to the computer or did you start with (pen on paper) sketches?

I recommend sketching 50+ ideas before narrowing a selection (eg: 10-12) to investigate further still on paper. This will likely leave you with maybe 5-7 you would move forward onto the computer in one color. This process will likely eliminate another 2-3 of your options, leaving you with 3-4 which you would develop further with color.

Pan, I did work through some sketches but definitely not 50+ of them! I think must have just had a dozen or so. But, I know a little more planning would have kept me from wasting my time on a a logo I can't use. Thank you for the link!

You're welcome btw: 50 sketches should not take more than 20-30 minutes. They are sketches, not rendered masterpieces. The sketching process not only helps you to come up with good ideas, it also helps you to get past bad ones.
