Just looking for some tips or ideas on ways to improve this. I am knew here however I plan on sticking around, so far this looks like people who know what they are doing. Just reading through some of the logo design criticisms and seeing the solutions proposed, I was really thrown back and knew I was at the right place.

Your logo and the Design is an art text do not sit well with each other. It looks like you've picked out a few very different retro aesthetics and presented them on 1 page. Your portfolio should be more unified.

The idea I was trying to use was to actually have the 'Design is Art' section as something that randomly changes. I would use typography to have a variety of randomly generating Art quotes, so they woul always be some kind of different design there.

I'm pretty sure design is design. And aren't all portfolios creative in their own way? I don't know of anyone who becomes a designer to be uncreative. Then you have grunge effects which seem the opposite of art - they're unconsidered. And retro. And script and sans serif. It's all over the shop.

I'd do away with the whole trying to be different thing. You either are or you aren't. It can appear as if you prefer different over good. I wonder sometimes why designer all have these minimalist sites, then I see something like this and realise it's because as a showcase for your portfolio you don't want to detract from the work. People want ease of navigation and an idea of what you do. A website isn't a philosophy.

This. Let the work speak for itself. I wouldn't mind the quote changer - could be really cool actually: IF it's well done. Right now it's not so much. I also don't agree with 'Design is Art'. Design solves a specific problem. Art does not. Check out these designer-designed quotes at the Phraseology Project - http://phraseologyproject.com - some really nice ones on there.

Why the distressed retro duped and mirrored swoosh? Seems a bit random. Can you elaborate on your rationale there?

I found that distracting. Distressed should never look duplicated, it loses its authenticity the same way words with recurring letters set in handwritten/grunge fonts do.

I dont know, just something I saw in my head while putting this piece together. I just knew I wanted vintage multicolored lines Like you see in a lot of typographic retro posters. I do the same thing when I play guitar I hear something but I dont know what notes there are , I know the rythm just not the pitch.

Design is all about function! Your first consideration is what does this portfolio have to do for you? It has to get you paying work! It has to show off your talent and ability to prospective clients and employers. It that aspect, it's like a personal branding project for you and your ability.

On the design itself, I agree with previous comments that there is too many random things going on. Create a heirarchy for the design and know why you want elements there.

If you like the style and fun of the Brush strokes in your logo. Follow that through into your overall concept. There is no real harmony between the element in your design. Items need to relate and relate to you. It's a good start, but my advice is to really think about how to represent yourself and your talent in the best light and and don't be afraid to really show off how creative you can be!

Yeah, I have a 100 ideas. Ideas spewing out my ears but get them to work together functionally and aesthetically has always been my challenge. I am a work in progress as far as design goes but every book and every design I do, they get a little better. So far I consider this my best portfolio design yet but thats just where I am yet.

Is that a self portrait? Your website is your first impression. Why so glum?

^I'd eliminate the self-portrait altogether. Is there a reason people need to see what you look like?

Maybe it doubles as a dating portfolio?

Lol. Now I know why they say wear a heavy sweater, but seriously though, its hard to find good forums like this where people give you good feedback. The usual is....'I like it." or 'Good Job' ..... I mean what the hell am I suppose to do with that other than pat myself on the back. I guess I dont really need a photo of me however the first Idea was to put an actual photograph of me not an Illustration which would hopefully lend some credibility to the site. I plan on freelancing fulltime when I am finished with school. I know it can be rough, I am prepared, I am also a certified welder and can do other crap jobs to make ends meet. I love web design, development and design in general, so thats my story and Im sticking to it.
