  • Comedy Festival Poster

    #1
    Hey everyone.

Here are two poster designs for an original musical comedy. The first is a final designed for last year's Melbourne Fringe Festival.

The second is the poster I'm working on for the same show in the 2013 Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

Please tell me your thoughts, I would love some feedback. If you were to pass, would you take a second look at the poster?!

Please note: the second poster is in the beginning stages and is missing some information. I just wanted to get some feedback before I continue.

It does not shout comedy at me - if I looked at it I would not even guess what it is about.

On the good side people who maybe saw the show and enjoyed it will remember the poster from last year - they may recommend friends once they see it. It looks
similar but new to last years - which in good in my opinion.

Date needs to be bigger - but overall very professional and a nice job.
Good to keep it similar if it did well before.

Photo is too stage. Or not staged enough. The top one is more ok than the new one. The top reminds of a British Farce type of comedy. There's a fine line between cheesy and campy. The girl in the red shirt on the second sorta stands out as not being ready for the camera shot.

You're gonna clean up that clipping mask, right?

very grateful for your responses, that's some great advice.

Yes, photo is still to be edited and cleaned up. Same goes for this photo.

Here's a very rough concept - attempting a different look. Trying to add some fun to the poster, less structure.

        Thoughts?

I prefer the structure of the first ones. At least there was some hierachy. The latest ones are all over the place and looks like you've just tried to fill in space rather than designing the elements together.

Are you working with any predefined dimensions or orientations? It's not often you can just switch from portrait to landscape just like that. Usually the client has specific spaces in mind for the poster and switching the orientation isn't an option.

Comedy posters are usually the least amusing things on the planet. Silly people with silly faces. Although to be fair I would take a second look at the one with all the sexy legs - so if you're trying to attract perverts, job well done.

Yep, going to have to agree with you there.

How do you feel about the idea of landscape A3? Might be a bit of a gamble but I think it's not so typical and could be a good move? Here's another rough design.

Sketcher, I'm actually in the show and am designing all promotional material so I'll put the final design to the others and see what they think. The poster will be at the Melbourne Town Hall where there will be another 500+ posters advertising for the Comedy Festival so I need something that will stand out.

Posters usually have to sit with other posters on a wall. If you have a wall of A3 posters all portrait orientation, the landscape poster will have to find another spot.

Could that possibly be a good thing? Chances are if there are 500+ posters, there will be another displayed as landscape orientation? Or is this a technicality and it's best to stick to portrait? And work on making the DESIGN unique, rather than orientation? I might have just answered my own question.

It really depends on the company who is distributing the posters. Mr Buda puts posters up for a living. If the poster doesn't fit, they either have to find another wall for it or they cut them to fit. He might even curse you.

Or your poster might have to go 2 up on an A2 spot.

You are missing a lot of information and when are you going to cut out the people properly?

The pale blue banners look like a mistake.

I'm not sure I care if someone shows a landscape or portrait version, or whether it's bound top or side.
What really does matter is does it show the work to its best potential. If I'm looking at...

Exactly Garricks. Personally I don't think she would but I've learned you can't really trust anyone. That's what I did, I set the pdf options to crap, non-printing security on it and sent it directly...

What is it you're worried about, that she'll take the PDF and bypass you for printing? When i send stuff (other than to my vendors for production) I always use smallest file size. Looks fine on screen...

Plus... there are so many custom skin sites out there now that seem to know what they are doing. Are you trying to compete, or just sell a few skins here and there. If only the latter, find someone that...

Securing them will work. You can decide whether or not to allow printing.

However, if someone really wants to bypass the security on a PDF, it's pretty simple to do.
