Oh great and mighty keepers of the Crit Pit, I come out of the shadows of lurkerdom to prostrate my n00b self before you, in your infinite wisdom, to seek kerning guidance. The attached is a logo I am working on for myself as a designer. I have been staring at it and compulsively adjusting the kerning until I am certain my eyes are going crossed and every instinct I have is utterly wrong. The typeface is Soin Sans Pro, if that's at all helpful. I would be grateful to receive feedback from seasoned kerners. Many thanks!

Welcome hook&eye!
We ask all new members to please have a read through these important threads and this announcement with our rules and FAQs so they'll know a bit about how this place runs.
Have you tried staring at it while it's upside down?

the o's look tighter than the rest of the characters, but i think that's working for you as a play on words because they look like eyes to me.

The kerning looks ok to me but, if it were mine and this is purely subjective you understand, I would be tempted to pull the words together more to make the whole thing look more united, to define the separation between all the elements I would knock the '&' element back slightly perhaps about 60-80% black. Other than that is looks great. Whats the thinking behind the name?

I feel (and this is just me) that there is too much space between the letters. I pulled this into illustrator and played around with it.
I'm not 100% in love with the ampersand (since it ISSSS my favorite glyph.)
But I can see how it's different and why you would like it.
Just playing around with it

Lalaland,
From our rules thread:
8. Do not take someone else's work that has been posted for critique and "redo" it for them. We encourage members to offer suggestions to improve a piece, and if the point that you are trying to make is difficult to explain a quick sketch might help to illustrate your point, but posting your own "alternate" design is not going to help another member learn anything. Even if your intention was to be helpful, the original poster may be offended that you did the work "for" them. Sharing your thoughts in your own words allows the original poster to interpret your ideas according to their own style and tastes and the work remains their own creation.

I'm not loving the spacing on either side of the ampersand/hook, the words look like floaters, but the kerning on hook & eye looks good.

I feel like it's too loose.
Some additional ways to look at kerning: upside down, reversed out (white on black). Changing these helps to focus on the space between letters rather than the words.

Is this a class assignment. I remember having to do this for a Latin word (helps to not focus on the actual word) and a full Latin quote. Buda gave good ideas to help - try those!

Outside the o's which have already been mentioned, it looks good. I like it. A stacked version like
h o o k
& e y e
Might work nicely also, for instances when that aspect ratio doesn't work with the space you have.
