  • Going to stop stealing sheep...

    #1
So I keep hearing about this wonderful book - Stop Stealing Sheep so I just bought it used off Amazon for $1.59. Shipping cost $11! Oh well. Still a bargain.

I guess I'm posting this here to remind people that design books can be expensive, but if you don't mind secondhand (I sure don't) then it's a steal!

I can't say I've ever spent $100+ for a book. There are books that are that price that I would love, but not love enough to fork over that cash!

I've read that book...taught me more about typography than 3 years at uni!
        Definately worth the money!

Anyone else have the compulsion to just buy (annd read of course) tons and tons of design books/magazines all the time? I think I would choose a book over food for the week!

Never spent £100 though...I think £50 was about the most!

I would never choose a book over food. The idea is insane.

Amazon is not my friend. However, that being said, I have a pretty decent personal library of art and design books. Two new ones came yesterday...about Illuminated Manuscripts.

Apropos of Amazon, I'm a huge fan of <www.powells.com> [in Portland, Oregon]. They have the BEST range of books, really well priced, great website. Don't be fooled by their "used" label on some. They're usually just out of current edition and "new" anyway. Sorry, just had to give'em a plug. Leave Amazon for dead any day.

Stealing sheep is a great book. Not as great if you are already familiar with intermediate level typography, but it still has plenty of information written in a VERY fun to read style. If you already have typography basics and beyond covered, I believe this is the text that has the red column to the right of every other page which includes more advanced concepts.

That's what makes the book so great - it's not bone dry like Robert Bringhurst's Elements of Typographic Style (amazing book, but cumbersome to read through at times.)

I have a book report on a design book due tommorow. I think I'm going to reread thinking with type because it's such a quick read. Meeg's History of Graphic Design is on the list too haha - 500+ pages vs. 80? hmmm.

I had to buy it for a typography class in college. I don't know if I read it then, but I've read it twice since then. I wish I had the fonts that are in the book so I could use some of them, but we only have the cd full of cheapo knock off fonts.

Interesting I have heard about this book before and tried looking/flipping through tthe few pages on Amazon but it didn't impress me. maybe I should order it from B&N and can return if not too good (for me that is).

And I would not buy books over food, i like the idea of perusing the bookstore with a few mags and books every once and a while.

The quality of the book completely depends on your level of experience with typography.

If you've been in the field for 10+ years and are good at what you do, there isn't much here for you. If you are a student it's a must have in my opinion - no matter how large your typographic ego soars.

If anything else, you'll have a book with a great name.

Although I fail to understand slightly how it evolved from "Anyone who would steal sheep would letterspace black letter" into "...would letterspace lowercase"

The blackletter statement is much bolder in my opinion. But I guess they had to modernize it!

I use play.com. I normally order DVDs there, but I discovered that they had the books I wanted aswell. It's a little bit cheaper at Amazon, but play.com don't charge for shipping.

I'm a compulsive online buyer of books and CDs, so I'll have to check out play.com. Thanks, Fredrich.

I am better off reading the books at the bookstore where i can sit and concentrate - Once i actually buy them - i usually don't have them with me when i need them or never get around to reading them.
I do have a really good Illustrator book though - I want to say its Classroom in a book - but i have to check.
I could use a good Photoshop book. Maybe i will just read them all at the bookstore - only problem is when you need it when you are at the computer.
Maybe i will bring them to work! Hmmm... big ideas!
