  • adjust type with pen/direct/path tool?

    #1
when you type into photoshop, it sets it as a vector shape layer right?

say that i want to tweak the font a lil bit or delete some parts, how do i accomplish this? I tried many times with the pen/direct/path tool but it keeps giving me this error.

yeah, photoshop is not what you should be using for such things... maybe i'm wrong.

    Illustrator is perfect for this.

My understanding, however is that Type is not a vector shape. It's just a font layer, but to "Play" with it you need to rasterize it, which is not going to be as clean as a vector.

That's all i can help with, since when I want to do what you are about to do, i use illy.

^^ Carter's understanding is entirely correct.

Do you need the text to be editable after you tweak it?

I was going to say you should head over to Illustrator with this project, but if you need editable text I dont think you can play with it in Illy either...

well not to make it editable after it is tweaked.. just wanted to manipulate the text itself once. based on what carter has said, it seems like illustrator is really the only way to accomplish this. u would think ps would have a feature like this right?

          thanks all

Well it does. Kinda. You can rasterize the type, as Carter said, and edit the raster data. That's what photoshop is primarily for - editting raster data. The vector tools are really just a supplement to this, and they're quite limited.

If you want to edit vectors, you're probably going to find yourself using Illy. After all, if you could do everythiing in photoshop, why would you pay for the rest of the Creative Suite?

In Illy, under objects >> path >> outline stroke. That will create an editable object for your text.

Actually for almost all of my design work I don't use photoshop. I'll use it to edit photos, create texture backgrounds, but for text and sharp layouts I'll use Illy.

For standard print I'll use InDesign to lay things out.

We also use Corel, but more for cut vinyl and our laser engraver.

Which i think shows the ideal and most professional set up, in my opinion. About the only real difference is one page layouts I usually do in illy, but sometimes in indesign. And i don't touch corel.

For the record, with your Type layer selected go to the Layer menu: type/convert to shape (or path) and you've got your vector shapes to play with.

                      I only use photoshop for:
                      Colour correcting pictures
                      Flattening problem pdfs
                      Cropping images
Resaving images at lower resolutions for emailing

Uh, no... That's only if you're using the Type Mask tool, not the Type tool. Press SHIFT-T until the T icon in your toolbox is a solid fill T, not an outlined T.
