I'm planning on getting a Macbook pro pretty soon, however, I need to purchase a font for a project I am working on. Do .ttf files work on both PC and Mac platforms or will I have to purchase my fonts again for the Mac?

Excellent! I got nervous b/c I noticed that when you go to purchase the font, there's an option for MAC and PC, so I wasn't sure.

With opentype fonts, they're all the same, Mac or Windows.
With postscript and truetype fonts, there are different Mac and Windows versions. However, Mac OS X supports Windows truetype and postscript fonts. Mac OS CLassic only supported the Mac type fonts, but very few people need to run any classic apps these days.

I'd say always go for an OpenType version of a font if you possibly can. It eliminates possible problems, and you have many more options open to you for setting the type. Adobe has an excellent page on the subject, and there's a fine article here explaining the essential and important reasons why OpenType is the way to go.
