  • Avenir Help (Bold)

    #1
I'm looking into purchasing Avenir for an upcoming project I'll be working on. I will be using this font for both an Identity and for text materials. The problem is, I can't find Avenir Bold. I'm pretty certain it doesn't exist.

So here's my question: If I was to purchase Avenir Roman as a textface, which would I purchase for the bold? You can view the different weights here: http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/linotype/avenir/

Right now, I'm thinking Roman for the text, and "85 heavy" as the bold for the text.

    Thoughts?

If you go directly to the Linotype website (e.g., here) you can download type specimen PDFs that should give you a good handle on what will work best for your project.

Ah, it's Frutiger's quite neat - except that only he ever used it - numerical system for classifying font weights.

The first digit is the weight, while the second is the type (i.e. roman, italic, oblique, etc).

Generally speaking, if you want a bold, you go up two weights from your base font, so if you're using the roman, you would ideally want a 75 bold - which as you say, doesn't exist. The 65 medium will probably be too light, so you're better off with the 85 heavy.

Having said that, I find Avenir actually tends to look better in lighter weights. Have you considered instead using the 45 Book as your base and the 65 Medium as your bold? I don't know your specific usage here, but generally speaking, that would be my choice.

The 85 weight (heavy) should suffice for bold. Oddly, Avenir doesn't have a 75, it skips directly from 65 to 85, missing 75 entirely.

I totally agree with Hewligan's suggestion to use the book weight. I am an Avenir addict - the way some people are Futura addicts, which is fitting I guess since Avenir is Adrian Frutiger's "Futura".

My biggest pleasure is mixing light/heavy weights on the same line. I did it a business with two locations and used the lighter weight for the name and then used the bold for the location name with no wordspace between them. So it was "Bob'sNYC" and "Bob'sMiami". [The business name wasn't Bob's :-D, but you get the point.]

              Which Gerber software?
Next question, why not import from Adobe to Gerber. We use signwares often. For output. Rarely for design (though some things are far easier to do in sgnwares over Illustrator...)

I do not believe there is Blur to Halftone button in Illustrator.
Any time I want to do a vector halftone (with dots), I use Rasterbator (bad name, good program)
But maybe what you are wanting...

I'm not going to bother saying what's already been said, I agree with it. I would suggest showcasing one area of interest per poster.

It's done by "hand". No plug-ins. No scripts. The designer uses their design skills to create ... um ... designs. Take a look at the video and links on this 2012 thread. All hand done from the...

Yeah, the hierarchy is an issue. The "ITD" and how it is rendered is more feint than the items surrounding it. The illustrations are nice, but unfortunately, not really important. I would not...
