  • Semester Long Type Project.. HELP!

    #1
    Hey My Gdf friends!

I am starting to freak out because I have this project due soon that I already should have started...

My teacher wants us to research 10 different typefaces and their designers, and gather lots and lots of info on them... info like (why was is designed, for what reason, what problems did that particular font solve, etc...) Then ultimatley, he wants us to take all our info and turn it into a book, with all the info, examples, and a specific theme...

My problem is.. that I don't know of any place to find history and information on famous fonts and their designers... We have to have like 2 per category.. like serif, sans serif, transitional, modern, slab, script, etc...

You guys know any websites or books that might help me?

Thanks sooooooo much for any suggestions!

How soon is your project due?

For an edge over your classmates, you should email some question to a couple of font designers asking about specific fonts they designed. Getting original answers should earn you major brownie points!

I did that for an illustration project once. Everyone else got their info from books but I emailed a list of questions to Michael Martchenko (Illustrator of children's book Paper Bag Princess) and got original answers. Many people in the industry are quite happy to help out students when approached directly. Especially if you mention that you are an aspiring designer/illustrator etc and admire their work

        Famous Names in Typography

Or a couple more specific names:

        Hermann Zapf

        Matthew Carter

I'd go to fonts.com and start looking for contemporary font foundries in the foundry list if you need to find designers you can email. Gonna be a little difficult to email the original font designers for some of the standard fonts you use on your computer today. Most of the solid standards were developed in the early days of print history.

if you don't need "famous" font designers, dafont.com has a list of designers on thier site. Pick some original fonts there and contact the designers who did them that way.

You have plenty of time! Michael Martchenko replied within a week. If you are emailing, most people check their emails at least once a week. You have time.

Keep your questions concise and easy to answer. If you like, you can post your draft email here and we can give you advice on it.

At fonts.com, some fonts have a "learn more about this product" (about halfway down the page, which you may find very useful. Frutiger is the top font at fonts.com and has this feature.

At linotype.com they also have some info on fonts. Here's a link to some info on Bickham Script by Richard Lipton - one of the most beautiful, well designed scripts IMO.

This list of font designers might be either useful to you or overwhelming!

I would definately email a few designers on the chance they might not all reply.

Good luck and please let us know how you go. I am very interested in their perspective so if you go ahead, could you please post their replies so we can have a nosey?

                          Hey y'all

So I figured out what I am going to do for this project.
I am going to find 10 fonts that famous bands use for their logos...(like the nirvana logo is onyx, and the weezer logo is century gothic) and I am going to get blank cd cases and design each according to the band..(so for example the one for nirvana will have the actual nirvana cover with their logo, then you open up the case and the booklet has all the info on the font etc...

I think this is a really cool idea, i am just having a little trouble finding some more bands that use fonts famous enough to research...

i found this one site called famousfonts.com, but it dosnt have that many..

So I ask of you my friends, if you know of any bands, music groups that use a well known researchable font?

I would appreciate it sooooo much for ANY help or input

                          Thanks!!!!!

                            Fat Boy Slim

                            Evanescence

I also found this site, but I think some of those are incorrect.
