  • Helvetica Project help!

    #1
    Hi everyone,

I am doing my dissertation on Helvetica and would be ever greatful if you could answer a few quetions, I only need a few words so it shouldn’t take long!

    1. Which 3 words would you use to describe Helvetica?

    2. Do you have any emotional response to Helvetica and its uses?

    3. In your opinion, is Helvetica ‘neutral’?

Isn't a dissertation an argumentive treatise?

    As for Helvetica
    1. boring, ubiquitous, and handy
    2. no.
    3. yes. But you can't pair it with absolutely any other font. Choose wisely.

Damn, I totally answered this yesterday...maybe I forgot to hit "post quick reply".

      1. non-descript, open, contemporary

      2. I like it. I feel like it's a friendly font but can still be serious when required.

      3. As neutral as a font can be.

I'm guessing you have seen the year's film: Helvetica. It's an entertaining and informative easily approachable film. I took my boyfriend (who has no interest in typography) and he actually enjoyed the film so that is saying a lot.

What do you hope to cover in your dissertation that wasn't covered in the film?

Thankyou very much for your answers!

I’m producing a book that questions the supposed neutrality of Switzerland and Helvetica as both on the surface appear the epitomy of neutrality, but when investigated they are anything but. I am questioning how a typeface can be seen as neutral when there are such un-neutral, contrasting opinions on it. I see Helvetica as having a personality that surrounds itself formed from the nature in which it has been used over the years that has nothing to do with the actual design of the typeface.

Our dissertation can either be the usual 10,000 words or a 7,500 word report on a project - which is what I have chosen.

On Nov. 20, a documentary called "Helvetica" is out on DVD. It's an interesting film on the history of typography, timed coincidently with the 50th birthday of the font.

            1. Plain, boring, overused

            2. No

            3. No – no font is neutral. Every single font has it's proper uses, as well as instances where it shouldn't be used.

PS: I'm answering on the assumption that you mean plain ol' Helvetica Roman. My answers might change with the version of Helvetica in question, especially something like the Light Extended, which I find to be simple, elegant and modern (but again, like any font, it has it's proper uses).

That's the film I was referring to. Highly reccommended to anyone that does anything with typography.

I finally paid attention to the ads and was surprised they were for local companies within a 10 minute drive of my house. How's that for targeted? I don't see any $5 logo one though.

So - I've revised it somewhat - some spot on comments there. I hadn't realised how Saul Bassy it was but it makes sense - I'm a big fan. The font was a bit rigid and as Roth said needed to be more fun....
