  • handwriting fonts: too consistent

Help, I've officially run out of both talent and ideas. I could really use some guidance and advice here.

I'm doing a personal project and have used a handwriting font to produce this:

Everyone's happy with the font except for one thing: it's too consistent.
It has such recognisable descenders, especially on the 'y' that it no longer looks naturall and handwritten - it looks like a font.

Can anyone suggest something I might try either with photoshop or Illustrator to tweak/randomise the text so that it looks more natural? (or at least less computer-generated)

Also, but not as important, is that I'd really like to try and make it look like a) it was written with a ball point pen and b) that the pen has pressed into the paper (yes, I tried bevel/emboss but couldn't get anywhere with it).

    All useful suggestions gratefully received.

NB: asking/telling me to write it out myself will fall on deaf ears - it's just not going to happen.

Does out need to be live text after the alterations? If not convert to outlines in illy, tweak the characters as you see fit. For ball point look try an inner glow and maybe overlay a soft white texture at a low transparency to give an illusion of pressure density.

that's too bad they want changes to it ... I like that font

I'm sure you can tweak it a bit in Illy.... but as far as the different looks ... I can't help you there .. I'm not very good at getting different filtered looks. Unless you want sparkles and a sunburst .... I'm really good at that

Thanks Kem. Should have said, it doesn't need to be live text. I can convert to outlines, or rasterize to my heart's content.
When you say 'tweak the characters' what do you mean? Dragging anchor points? Or some sort of filter? Or, just playing with the kerning?

lol. Perhaps if I put a nice lens flare behind it, no one will pay any attention to the font?!!!

Yeah, gotta fix the "y." I have to agree with them, it's too consistent.

If it doesn't have to be live, why not create it the old fashioned way? Find someone with great handwriting and have them write it out for you.

Also sums up my feelings. I'm sorry if this sounds cranky, but the whole sentiment of the sentence you're working with seems kind of shanghaied by using a typeface made to simulate handwriting and digitally tricked out to look more like real handwriting.

The best script and handwriting fonts have alternate characters that you can use to your hearts content. There are so many y that you should have at least 3 cuts of y for this piece. Try some that are a more conservative so they will be less noticeable when repeated.
It is more fun to talk with someone who doesn't use long, difficult words but rather short, easy words like "What about lunch?" Winnie the Pooh

I have to agree, if it doesn't have to be live, doing it by hand and scanning it would be far more efficient

have you considered actually handwriting it then scanning it?

I grew up playing text only adventure games. The banking was always the easiest part. You put your loot into whatever passed for a ''bank'' and kept on playing.

Actually, I do have a print related issue if you'd like to take a stab at helping me with. Should I post in the correct category with the issue and picture that goes with it?
