don't mix too many together; avoid close types (arial and helvetica and frutiger)

Fonts have different personalities, but these can change slightly when used.

Using an appropriate font generally comes with experience. For example, seeing Comic Sans used in a wedding invitation at a lavish hotel would give me hives.

I think most people can be taught to pick fonts to a degree. But there are some people that can't see the difference between fonts, let alone their personalities and appropriate uses. I all those people font blind. Like colour blindness, but for fonts.

Learning about typography and the terms to describe them will help you see differences in fonts. It's hard to observe something unless you can identify unique characteristics about them.

It's always trial and error for me. I'll choose two fonts that I think will be perfect together, and when I try them out it's awful. I just keep trying.

I find the best way to get to know a font and their personalities and characteristics is to go out drinking with them. Usually at a strip club. They tend to let their true colours shine when drunk and "sporting". Plus, they don't notice you analyzing them as much because they're distracted.

That only works for slutty serifs - they already have their bits sticking out for all to see. They can't even keep their ascenders in their pants.

Have you ever tried to learn about a sans serif without drinking?? It's awful! They're all so prim and proper and clean cut...Stuck up beyond belief! It seems like every time they want to talk to you, they act like have to ascend to your level...as if they're in some upper case above you. Get some tequila into them and they start walking all italic like, pretty quick...and boy can they be bold! Much more fun to learn about them then. Just don't give em to much or they really start to glyph off...
