  • Who owns host account? designer or client?

    #1
I'm starting out as a freelance web designer and I'm a bit confused on some things:

Does the client sign up for the hosting service and pay the bill? Some hosts allow you to store several websites on their server, so do you build your clients' sites and bill them? How does this work?

Do you highly recommend ecommerce skills as a web designer?

    Any tips will be appreciated.

I suggest you set up the account and all of the details for them, giving them access to the login and billing. When my company first got it's website, our designer did all the work and just said, "Here, pay the bill each month." If you try to host several client's website on your one host, you are going to start running into bandwidth issues and those are not fun to deal with. State before-hand that once the website is up and running, any changes to the hosting account will require an hourly fee to set up.

Hi Matt. So then the client pays the hosting bill right from the start? I'm wondering if you often run into clients with trust issues because it involves their credit card and login info.

To keep myself free and clear of cc and security issues, I have my clients set up their own hosting accounts. I may give them detailed instructions on how to do it, but I let them handle it. If you explain to them that you prefer not to know their billing info, they usually understand in my experience.

And yes, e-commerce is very important to web design. You'll find yourself dealing with it quite a bit. I know I do.

I run a hosting business for clients by hosting them on my dedicated servers. More stable and controlable than "shared" or "mystery hosting". The clients pay me directly under contract and I have two other people monitoring the servers as well as the co-lo that the servers are at.

It really just depends on how much you want to be a part of your clients internet presence, how much you want to manage, and what you are willing to take repsonsibility for.

I'd prefer to not manage the clients domains and hosting, but sometimes, they just cannot handle it themselves. I dont mind holding their hands if I get paid.

If you do decide to manage them, make sure you keep damn good records of every communication and transaction, as well as usernames and passwords for shell accounts, ftp, emails, etc. If you manage domains, keep them under one umbrella (networksolutions is the f-ing ****).

Thanks for the tip everyone. Now I have a better idea of where to go with this.

Note: The CC updates were released this morning. On a Mac, you must be running Lion or greater (10.7 or 10.8) to run Photoshop. I'm not sure about the other apps yet.

We haven't upgraded to CC yet. I'm glad to hear that it is working for you. While no one likes being forced on to CC, in the coming year, more and more of us will join and it is good to hear that it is...

Sketching, handwriting and drawing are two different things, so what works in one might not work in another.

                Thanks.

I took a look at luxe -- looks good. Looks like it's digitally printed -- would that be as good as litho or letterpress?
