  • Easy CGI Languages.

    #1

    I'm a graphic designer just moving into CGI web page creation. I solely want learn a programming language for doing CGI scripts.
    I need a language that is relatively quick and easy to learn, and is supported by many Web hosts (including free ones).
    I have done lots of browsing, but without a good, long time working knowledge of languages it's hard to judge what's best.

    What I know (which is not a lot):
    I know most servers support Perl, but I want to try and steer clear of Perl because it frightens me (well Perl and Regular Expressions).
    I'm learning REBOL at the moment because I think it's real easy for doing CGI stuff (and no Regex)!
    Only thing is that not a lot of hosts support REBOL (and no free ones at present).

    Which languages are you guys using to do your CGI?
    Heard of any new languages worth having a look at?

      PHP should be fine for everything you want.

      Most people are moving away from CGI and towards PHP anyway. It is well supported and free.

          Wait your missing the point. You must embrace regex not fear it! It can save you hundreds of hours of work...no kidding. Start slow and get a good book - O'Reilly makes concise ones but if thats not your cup o'tea then try a sybex book.

          Perl, BTW, doesn't have to use regex and PHP also has regex ( so does javascript and asp and vb and ... )

          The simplest languages that you can use is probably python or vb. VB is included in ASP and python is an add on to your server. If you already have PHP then you might want to go down that path.

          Also don't forget that Java server pages (JSP) is also available but probably a little difficult for you.

          Tell us more about your background in programming, we can help you out more then.

            </o>

            Anything potential customers want really. It's usually doing stuff with input from forms? My Taiji teacher wants me to do something where she can update her class times/dates on a web page via a form or some other method. </o>

            Thanks, I thought PHP was another language for doing CGI, not a replacement. I will look into it. </o>

            I am from a print design background. As with most of us we have made webpages with dreamweaver + fireworks and dabbled with some coding because customers have wanted us to do them webpages (more people seem to want webpages nowadays which starts the alarm bell ringing). The whole CGI thing is a bit daunting as it delves into more of the hardcore programming side of it. I like to make pretty pictures! </o>
            </o>
            //You must embrace regex not fear it! </o>
            Will research the subject more. Sybex you say?</o>

              Just to make things a little clearer.

              CGI is a method of communication or protocol for talking with a web server ( Common Gateway Interface = CGI )

              It IS how most script languages talk to the web server.

              Yes, on Windows they have an ISAPI interface which is supposed to be faster but its still CGI in the very front end, it is designed to make the script language faster so that it doesn't have to load/unload the script engine for each page. Apache has the mod_* modules which make the CGI scripts faster but they are still CGI.

              CGI is NOT a language specific thing. Most installations of PHP on windows are CGI installations!
