I want to design a site which also acts as an online community. For people to upload and share photos, edit profiles and generally interact. I know nothing about ASP, MySQL or server side script... am I walking one step too far...lol ! What do I need to do to go about creating it? It's non-commercial so I can take as long as I like and do many versions. But I need to start somewhere!

Graphic Design Heroes! Call me Captain Type Caster. I’ve fought off “The Evil Cosmic Sans” for year but it seems “Dr. Extreme Untalent” keeps bringing him back. I must find a way to defeat this evil creature.

Capt. Creative bring me those comps…

there's a simple Perl flat-file script out there that does this.......... that's what I have running my Runninghorses.net website -- it's available for free at http://www.web-app.org/

morguefile.com is an online community that has an enormous, copyright-free photo database, with all work being shot by people who are a part of the community.

I'm confused with that Perl Flat-file script...what do you do with it??? I'm a real newbie to cms and web development. I mean a one stop shop package would be great but I'm baffled! Plus I'm running on Mac OS9 and it doesn't seem to support that Cowgirl. I like that Cowgirlexpressions.com...it's neat!

xMx, thanks! hmm, not sure how the difference in Mac/PC would affect the coding... I'm a perl-noob myself, but I've looked at enough to figure out how to move around in the script. I used it to create my speedhorse website, http://www.Runninghorses.net/ .... so you can see some of the features in action, and also see how customizable it is. The thing I like about flat file databases is that you don't have to figure out tables and keys and relationships (like with MySQL)... A couple of quick questions about your community site you want to do... Do you have the web hosting setup? what kind of server would it be? I'd assume that if it was a Unix box (which isn't a Windows box) that you could use your Mac to edit the txt files.... Thanks about the CE site! Im getting ready to redesign it a bit.

I get this question a lot. Thanks for the linkup neet. Other than the these you have to buy, you'd have to learn how to use mysql, php and install imagemagick onto a unix server. If you are trying to use OS9 as a webserver you'll never get it to work, (you may but its like putting the ox in front of the cart) you'll have to upgrade to osx which has apache installed, then install php, mysql and imagemagick. You'll save yourself years of headaches just getting a virtual host. Perl flat files work too, but using mysql is much much easier and a lot more robust.
