    Hello all!

I am a Graphic Design Student writing a research paper for a Web Design class. I am trying to interview 5 different Web Designers with 5 of the same questions. If you are a web designer please respond to this thread with answers to the questions, your name, your company name, (or maybe you are freelance.) and a link to a site you have designed. The questions are:

    1. Do you feel that a print designer in today’s world can survive with little or no web experience?

    2. How important a role does freelancing play in your career?

    3. Would you say that most design firms pay more attention to a potential employee’s education, or a personal portfolio when hiring?

    4. Do you think table based layouts are obsolete?

    5. Do you use Adobe Dreamweaver for your work, and how essential is it to know code when designing in Dreamweaver?

    Thanks very much everyone!!

    1. Do you feel that a print designer in today’s world can survive with little or no web experience?
    Yes.

    2. How important a role does freelancing play in your career?
It has not been very important in my career, as I'm not really the 'networking' type. 9-5 jobs and steady paychecks are preferred as it wasn't my lifelong desire to be a web designer. If I wanted to freelance in something, this wouldn't be it.

    3. Would you say that most design firms pay more attention to a potential employee’s education, or a personal portfolio when hiring?
It's hard to say because I haven't ever had to hire anyone. I'm sure certain companies value one over the other.

    4. Do you think table based layouts are obsolete?
They shouldn't be used, but they still are.

    5. Do you use Adobe Dreamweaver for your work, and how essential is it to know code when designing in Dreamweaver?
I don't use Dreamweaver anymore. When I did, it was more as a text editor/file manager than what I assume is its intended purpose. It's not essential to know code to use it; that's more or less the point of the program.

      1. Do you feel that a print designer in today’s world can survive with little or no web experience?
Yes, I would think so, although an understanding of what's feasible on the web helps.

      2. How important a role does freelancing play in your career?
Not so important in my career as such, but certainly in my life it is very important; both financially and educationally. Whether I apply what I learn to my day job I don't know, but I would guess I do subconciously.

      3. Would you say that most design firms pay more attention to a potential employee’s education, or a personal portfolio when hiring?
Personal portfolio, by far. As long as the applicant can string a sentence together I'm not especially bothered about whether they've learned how to pass a couple of exams. (</cynic>)

      4. Do you think table based layouts are obsolete?
Yes, but people need to remember that tables themselves are still very important

      5. Do you use Adobe Dreamweaver for your work, and how essential is it to know code when designing in Dreamweaver?
I use Dreamwaever, yes, but I wouldn't know where to start designing in it. What little design I do, I usually rough up in Photoshop, then go straight to hard code; that's just me though, it's a personal thing for different people, and everyone should work how they feel comfortable.

Here's a site I just finished - http://www.i4chygiene.co.uk/ - not the most exciting thing in the world, but it was turned around in two days, so I'm happy with how it worked out
