What site did they show you where everything was "locked"?

I bet it was probably a flash site with right click disabled that was "locked".

Isn't there some way to place a 1 bit transparent GIF over all the content which will stop text highlighting and right click image saves?

Most of Snopes.com's content is not selectable. I'm not sure how they do it, but there's a vulnerability...if you click and drag starting in a hyperlink, it can be selected and copied.

Disable and Javascript and copy all you want. Its doubtful there is a way to do this without using flash.

People will always be able to go into the HTML and take whatever they want. Your only going to stop people who are technically impaired.

There is a way of doing it in HTML. If you right click it causes a popup that you can have anything in. I was on a site and when you right clicked an image it gave a popup that said " HANDS OFF, THATS OURS".

If they don't want their content copied or stolen, they shouldn't digitize it. Making something into digitally readable data makes it infinitely duplicable.

I don't where clients get stupid ideas like this one.

If they're that concerned about their copy getting stolen they shouldn't display it. Even with whatever steps they take to lock it, someone will be determined enough to just read it and type it out.

Trust me, my first reaction was "well why do you want a website then?"
I told the client that i don't really know of any solution that will work and they insist that they will not upload the site until they can lock it.

bascially the "scramblers" aka making your code not make sense but still works is using a script.

There's a few methods the most common is using md5 hash to scramble the html to anyone who looks at it, but the browsers are able to decode it to a visible working site.

Oldat29, the popup is based on javascript and disabling right clicking.

Kool's method combined with the md5 method is a nice way to detour everyone but the most tech savy from getting to the site.

I've also seen sites which use a Div float method and a small script that will import the data into the div. However when you look at the code all you see is the html head/body and div id="content" That took me a while (like a week or so) to dig out a bit how the guy did it. He also used serverside scripting, Java and some apache redirects. Wow, it was complex.

All of these methods can cause cross compatibility issues.

Flash is going to be the next and perhaps easier method to convert their site.

However as with everything, if it is visible then it can be copied. If it is not visible then there is no marketing advantage over the company who is making the most on the net.

Also, everything has been said, wrote, imaged and posted on the net in one way shape or form. So unless they have the "most undeniable super revolutionary idea" - eh, its not new news to anyone.
