Restricting Forum Access

Jam, this probably isn't what you're asking for, but there's an app called Yammer that's kind of a Twitter for companies. In order to sign up you have to have a common e-mail, like jam@company.co.uk or you can't get in. A few dozen of us have been testing it at my work. Like Twitter, you can see the entire stream, or just people you're following, but you also can set up private groups. For example, I have one set up for just our department, and it's invitation only.

Most of the mainstream forum packages (phpBB, vBulletin etc) allow you to restrict access, including read access, to registered users only.

Standard forums all have restriction abilities.

There is nothing special about this and definitely doesn't require an intranet. Use phpBB. Create a group for your users and allow all forums to only be seen by that group. If anyone outside visits the board they will see a mostly blank page. Nearly any forum software can do this; e.g. this board probably has an administrator forum that you cannot see.
