  • CAPTCHA generator... a preference?

    #1
Yep, I'm back to pleading with the web gurus on here for advice. (can you tell I'm a printer designer stuck with a small portion of her job as a web designer. )

I need to generate some spam bot controls on a website that uses a basic mail form. I have been told that a CAPTCHA generator is what I need. Anyone have a recommendation on the best, easiest and it has to be free. (cause the boss believes that while print is expensive, the web is free *sigh*)
I have looked and found that maybe this one is the best:
    http://recaptcha.net/

but before I spent forever making it work (or at least that is how it will feel to me as I try to code it in). I wanted to make sure that people think it's good.

    Thanks!

Yeah I would've recommended re-captcha as well, it's a pretty ingenious system. And you'd be helping digitize books!

craigslist uses recaptcha for submissions, and their traffic hasn't dropped off dramatically, so I think you're fine

recaptcha is good. but if it is attached to any type of mail form, make sure you have other spam preventive measures, like removing code from fields, limiting characters in the to/from area, preventing variable injection into the form itself.

Most default forms that just assign the variables to the subject, sender, message and send via a server side mailer will be injected - guaranteed.

Upon submit you should have some sort of spam/injection check script to make your form safe. If you don't then I suggest using dd-formmailer. So far it is the best mailing script out there. It does take a little bit of reading to get a hang of how they want you to put in the form in their code, but the checks make it well worth the time. And they are already set up to use recaptcha, all you need is your recaptcha key.

            Thanks Jade.

Well... I got the recaptcha to show up on my site no problem... but now it is not sending out any emails... and it doesn't seem to want to allow it to error either.
            Trying to work it out.
Gotta say I really am not a fan of this whole php thing... html is so much easier! lol.

*happy dance* so after almost four hours of debugging and working it all out. I made this all work.
Thanks again guys for your suggestions! I really do appreciate it.

Thanks to Scribe and Longboy we have a couple of pretty effective workarounds. First create a couple of new bookmarks/favorites in you browser toolbar. Then add the following links to your new bookmarks....

I think I am getting a bit better with the pen tool, but let me know if you see where I can improve? Also, if there are areas to improve the illustration style, thanks?...

This is something I made in my free time.

I'm not planning on going to art school or anything like that, but I still like drawing and designing, so I'm planning on doing it as a side thing....
