  • Is a girly website professional?

    #1
    Hi guys

I am going to be designing a website for my wife. She is a legal secretary, but does not work as she is now a full time mum. But she wants to get into freelancing as a legal typist. She is quite a girly girl, so was thinking about doing a girly logo, website and stationary. Maybe have the logo inspired by a daisy, as she likes daisies. Is this professional for this type of work? Or would a more formal design be in order?

    Cheers

It needs to be professional/formal for a legal typist I imagine. But this doesn't mean it has to be without personality. As the designer it is up to you get that balance. I see no reason why it couldn't be daisy-based, you can have formally styled and professional daisy based design.

I would tend to design for both the industry and the individual. Making something too girly may hinder her ability to acquire work. If the industry dictates or expects a serious 'image', the girly 'image' projected may be perceived unfavourably.

^yup. Sometimes it isn't about what you 'like'. It's about what will sell what you do.

I realise that yeah, just thought would have added a personal touch to the company identity, as she will be wanting return custom, so was thinking it would make people more attracted to it. But i am obviously wrong about this one, hehe.

Not saying you are wrong per se, just take into consideration what will sell first, then modify.

For the logo, i sketched a few ideas, and created this as a starter (3 different shades)........ Will be along side the company name

Who hires freelance legal typists? Will the people hiring her take her seriously if it's too girly?

the green is probably not reproducible in CMYK.
The pink doesn't read against white.

The only way to really judge is to look at the competition.

IMHO girly websites work for things that are potentially girly - wedding planners, florists, salons, etc.

This is something I run into with clients sometimes - they know what they like, but they don't think as much about what their customer base will like.

Although girly websites can look professional, as a potential customer I'd be wondering if the person understands business. What does a daisy have to do with legal typing? If that connection isn't communicated somehow, then I might think the business owner is more concerned with personal style then with work.

Additionally, by using a girly-theme, you are passing up the opportunity to sell. You're only going to have a few seconds for website visitors to decide whether or not to stay. Use those seconds to sell your services, not to your personality.

ALWAYS design for the end user, this case the clients your wife wishes to attract. Check out the competition and look at the clients industry websites.

Never design for customers personality, this case your wife, unless that what she is selling

Totally agree with this reasoning. If I was hiring a legal typist, and her website was sprinkled with pink flowers, I'd be nervous about handing sensitive or serious materials over to her.

I feel an identity system can be feminine and professional, but I'm not sure it can be girly and professional.

I agree with the others, check out the competition. I'm guessing you might find pastels, but not flowers and doodly scrollwork.

I love it when you guys get all technical.

bigmaz, I agree with the others about the girly stuff. Maybe you could use a more abstract/geometric representation of a daisy? This has been done for centuries in art all around the world as most things in nature have a geometric balance.

I found this page on Islamic geometric patterns by googling geometric daisy motif (search the page to find the references to the daisy). I know the stuff in the link is too intricate for a logo, but I'm sure you can find lots of other inspiration and eventually come up with something you can incorporate without making things look too girly.

I actually ended up going with RichCopy. It's free, only overwrites files that have been changed since last backup (quicker backups,) and doesn't compress or pack the files. My brother who is an IT tech...

Actually, not so bad for a beginner. The thing is, it's not only a matter of doing it "correctly;" it's one of those things that simply takes practice. It's no different than when you were new...

It's real easy to use and doesn't change your files in any way.
