  • Guided help system

    #1
Does anyone know of any sites or anything online that uses a guided help system you can turn on or off?

We're looking to implement something where a user can click on "wizard mode" and be guided through step by step on making something online, but we'd like to see what others are doing just to compare to what we've come up with.

    Thanks

      Hmmmm *ponders*

Nothing that comes to mind. But I am interested in what you find that is out there (please post your findings).

Where I currently work we create online tutorials for our website, but they are just videos that you watch and it shows you how to do this, or that within the website. A "Wizard Mode" might be a nice touch for our new website that is being talked about currently.

one way would be to use a cookie and assign a css "theme".

During the length of a visit or login the person can choose which theme to use.

CSS tool box is a neat trick that you can use along with ajax (mootools or jquery) to expand the hidden help boxes around various parts of the sites.

If someone chooses the "non-wizard" theme, then the site would access a second (set) CSS sheet that would hide the tips, and adjust any formatting as needed.

ps: the hidden divs could contain anything from flash roll over flyouts that "animate" where to click on a page. To links for videos, or even just a "what this does" text.

It's going to be all ajax'y and JS, so that part is taken care of, I'm more concerned with the usability, I'd like to believe i can design this from the ground up from a usability end, but since they aren't that common it's really hard to know what good conventions are etc..etc..

I actually ended up going with RichCopy. It's free, only overwrites files that have been changed since last backup (quicker backups,) and doesn't compress or pack the files. My brother who is an IT tech...

Yep, I had a look at this forum on an iPad this morning and looked pretty good. Doesn't work with Tapatalk, but maybe we don't need it to.

Actually, not so bad for a beginner. The thing is, it's not only a matter of doing it "correctly;" it's one of those things that simply takes practice. It's no different than when you were new...

              I use Cobain Backup http://www.cobiansoft.com/index.htm

It's real easy to use and doesn't change your files in any way.

Aww, we had a bunny when I was a kid. I loved to trans it out by rubbing between its ears. We also had another rabbit. That rabbit was a bit more formidable. He chased horses....
